Viguerie: "The party leadership should resign immediately"

for some reason, newsmax emails began landing in my spam folder a couple of months ago... since i always check my spam folder for things that may have fallen in there by mistake, i always read - and usually chuckle - at the subject headers of the newsmax emails before deleting them... a surprising number push "miracle medical remedies" and get-rich-quick schemes, but there are also the usual run of headlines such as "Hillary's Antics Could Still Save the GOP" and "Bennett, Lieberman Applaud Hillary’s New Voice"... this one from richard viguerie, however, got me curious enough to open it...
Viguerie: Republican Leaders Must Resign

The Republican Party must replace its leadership or conservatives will continue to withhold support and the GOP will face “disaster” in November, leading conservative activist Richard A. Viguerie declared.

“Republican Party leaders must resign,” said Viguerie, publisher of ConservativeHQ.com and the pioneer of political direct mail.

[...]

He named a number of prominent Republicans, including President Bush, Karl Rove, party chairman Mike Duncan, House Minority Leader John Boehner, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, former Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott, and House Minority Whip Roy Blunt.

[...]

“For things to change, for conservatives to be justified in once again giving our contributions, our volunteer efforts, our energy, and votes to the GOP, the party must clean house. The party leadership should resign immediately.

[...]

Viguerie has this message for the current GOP leadership: “For the future of the Republican Party, for America, and the cause of freedom: Go!”

well, i've been calling for mass resignations since the officially-sponsored ethnic cleansing of new orleans following hurricane katrina, not to save the republican party, to be sure, but to save my country, but, hey... i'll take it any way i can get it...

Nancy Pelosi is a traitor to her nation by not leading the charge against the criminals in the White House

from the peace team...
There is something truly phenomenal going on in San Francisco. A political novice by the name of Shirley Golub has the Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, running scared, afraid that if she agrees to debate the challenger she will not be able to defend her record of capitulation, afraid the voters of the 8th congressional district will no longer make excuses for political cowardice ... just afraid.

And that's exactly the way Shirley Golub called it last week, when she called Nancy Pelosi out for being a political coward, using those exact words. Listen to the radio ad they are all talking about for yourself.

Shirley Golub's campaign.

[...]

With the revelations that directives to torture came straight from the White House, in excruciating detail, from meeting of the principals at the highest level, it is a national disgrace that Congress has not already commenced impeachment hearings, of the Vice President who presided over it all, and the absentee President who now admits he knew about the whole thing.

What are we to call this but the most abject cowardice? Why would we believe that anything would change by electing more cowards cut from the same cloth? If Congress is incapable of standing up for itself now, why would be believe that under some subsequent administration they would acquit themselves with any actual valor?

And yet there are now those trying to make a controversy out of telling the truth, when the real controversy is all the lies. There are those who would try to make a scandal out of confronting scandal, when the real scandal is those who are too frightened to expose it.

So listen to Shirley Golub's new radio spot again, and ask yourself if there is even a single word she speaks that is not the straight unadulerated truth.

there is only one honorable thing for the complicit and criminal members of the bush administration to do and that is to resign... by extension, the speaker of the house of representatives, by refusing to uphold the duties of her office, should resign as well... the key word, however, is "honorable," a word that carries no meaning in bushworld or, evidently, in pelosiworld either...

Why hasn't this man resigned?

or, better yet, been prosecuted for war crimes...

2006

2007

2008

here's a closer look...

The latest Gallup poll finds that President Bush’s approval rating has fallen to 28 percent — “a record low” for his administration. Bush’s approval is “lower than that of any president since World War II, with the exceptions of Jimmy Carter (who had a low point of 28% in 1979), and Richard Nixon and Harry Truman, who suffered ratings in the low- to mid-20% range in the last years of their administrations.”

Another high level, totally corrupt Bush administration official resigns

another loser calls it quits...
Housing and Urban Development Secretary Alphonso Jackson is expected to announce his resignation Monday, according to people familiar with the matter, a decision that will deal a blow to the Bush administration's efforts to tackle the housing and mortgage mess.

The exact reasons for Mr. Jackson's decision couldn't be learned. The secretary has been beset recently by allegations of cronyism and favoritism.

ferchrissake, why doesn't GEORGE resign and just make it one hell of a lot easier on everybody...?

More than 24,000 interrogations have been conducted at Guantánamo since 2002 and EVERY ONE WAS VIDEOTAPED

let's see if THIS grows legs...
INTERROGATION AND VIDEOTAPING

[...]

[P]ublicly available Government documents demonstrate the following:

  • More than 24,000 interrogations have been conducted at Guantánamo since 2002
  • Every interrogation conducted at Guantánamo was videotaped.
The Central Intelligence Agency is just one of many entities that interrogated detainees at Guantánamo.

The agencies or bureaus that interrogated at Guantánamo include: the Central Intelligence Agency and its Counterterrorism Center; the Criminal Investigation Task Force (CITF); the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI); the Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU) of the FBI; Defense Intelligence Analysis (DIA); Defense Human Intelligence (HUMINT); Army Criminal Investigative Division (ACID); the Air Force Office of Special Investigations (OSI); and the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS). Private contractors also interrogated detainees.

Each of these entities has identical motives to destroy taped investigations as has the Central Intelligence Agency. As one former senior Central Intelligence Agency official put it: “It’s a qualitatively different thing—seeing it versus reading about it.”

One Government document, for instance, reports detainee treatment so violent as to “shake the camera in the interrogation room” and “cause severe internal injury.” Another describes an interrogator positioning herself between a detainee and the camera, in order to block her actions from view.

The Government kept meticulous logs of information related to interrogations. Thus, it is ascertainable which videotapes documenting interrogations still exist, and which videotapes have been destroyed.

in a parallel universe somewhere, a report like this would result in the resignation of the president, the vice president, and the entire cabinet...

With nearly a thousand documented lies, when can we expect Bush's resignation?

because i think the information jim put up last night is so terribly important, i'm posting the entire center for public integrity report here... also, since the center's site server is maddeningly slow, this will be a little more convenient for those who want to read it all...

False Pretenses

Following 9/11, President Bush and seven top officials of his administration waged a carefully orchestrated campaign of misinformation about the threat posed by Saddam Hussein's Iraq.

President George W. Bush and seven of his administration's top officials, including Vice President Dick Cheney, National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice, and Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, made at least 935 false statements in the two years following September 11, 2001, about the national security threat posed by Saddam Hussein's Iraq. Nearly five years after the U.S. invasion of Iraq, an exhaustive examination of the record shows that the statements were part of an orchestrated campaign that effectively galvanized public opinion and, in the process, led the nation to war under decidedly false pretenses.

On at least 532 separate occasions (in speeches, briefings, interviews, testimony, and the like), Bush and these three key officials, along with Secretary of State Colin Powell, Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz, and White House press secretaries Ari Fleischer and Scott McClellan, stated unequivocally that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction (or was trying to produce or obtain them), links to Al Qaeda, or both. This concerted effort was the underpinning of the Bush administration's case for war.

It is now beyond dispute that Iraq did not possess any weapons of mass destruction or have meaningful ties to Al Qaeda. This was the conclusion of numerous bipartisan government investigations, including those by the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence (2004 and 2006), the 9/11 Commission, and the multinational Iraq Survey Group, whose "Duelfer Report" established that Saddam Hussein had terminated Iraq's nuclear program in 1991 and made little effort to restart it.

In short, the Bush administration led the nation to war on the basis of erroneous information that it methodically propagated and that culminated in military action against Iraq on March 19, 2003. Not surprisingly, the officials with the most opportunities to make speeches, grant media interviews, and otherwise frame the public debate also made the most false statements, according to this first-ever analysis of the entire body of prewar rhetoric.

President Bush, for example, made 232 false statements about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq and another 28 false statements about Iraq's links to Al Qaeda. Secretary of State Powell had the second-highest total in the two-year period, with 244 false statements about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq and 10 about Iraq's links to Al Qaeda. Rumsfeld and Fleischer each made 109 false statements, followed by Wolfowitz (with 85), Rice (with 56), Cheney (with 48), and McClellan (with 14).

The massive database at the heart of this project juxtaposes what President Bush and these seven top officials were saying for public consumption against what was known, or should have been known, on a day-to-day basis. This fully searchable database includes the public statements, drawn from both primary sources (such as official transcripts) and secondary sources (chiefly major news organizations) over the two years beginning on September 11, 2001. It also interlaces relevant information from more than 25 government reports, books, articles, speeches, and interviews.

Consider, for example, these false public statements made in the run-up to war:

  • On August 26, 2002, in an address to the national convention of the Veteran of Foreign Wars, Cheney flatly declared: "Simply stated, there is no doubt that Saddam Hussein now has weapons of mass destruction. There is no doubt he is amassing them to use against our friends, against our allies, and against us." In fact, former CIA Director George Tenet later recalled, Cheney's assertions went well beyond his agency's assessments at the time. Another CIA official, referring to the same speech, told journalist Ron Suskind, "Our reaction was, 'Where is he getting this stuff from?' "
  • In the closing days of September 2002, with a congressional vote fast approaching on authorizing the use of military force in Iraq, Bush told the nation in his weekly radio address: "The Iraqi regime possesses biological and chemical weapons, is rebuilding the facilities to make more and, according to the British government, could launch a biological or chemical attack in as little as 45 minutes after the order is given. . . . This regime is seeking a nuclear bomb, and with fissile material could build one within a year." A few days later, similar findings were also included in a much-hurried National Intelligence Estimate on Iraq's weapons of mass destruction — an analysis that hadn't been done in years, as the intelligence community had deemed it unnecessary and the White House hadn't requested it.
  • In July 2002, Rumsfeld had a one-word answer for reporters who asked whether Iraq had relationships with Al Qaeda terrorists: "Sure." In fact, an assessment issued that same month by the Defense Intelligence Agency (and confirmed weeks later by CIA Director Tenet) found an absence of "compelling evidence demonstrating direct cooperation between the government of Iraq and Al Qaeda." What's more, an earlier DIA assessment said that "the nature of the regime's relationship with Al Qaeda is unclear."
  • On May 29, 2003, in an interview with Polish TV, President Bush declared: "We found the weapons of mass destruction. We found biological laboratories." But as journalist Bob Woodward reported in State of Denial, days earlier a team of civilian experts dispatched to examine the two mobile labs found in Iraq had concluded in a field report that the labs were not for biological weapons. The team's final report, completed the following month, concluded that the labs had probably been used to manufacture hydrogen for weather balloons.
  • On January 28, 2003, in his annual State of the Union address, Bush asserted: "The British government has learned that Saddam Hussein recently sought significant quantities of uranium from Africa. Our intelligence sources tell us that he has attempted to purchase high-strength aluminum tubes suitable for nuclear weapons production." Two weeks earlier, an analyst with the State Department's Bureau of Intelligence and Research sent an email to colleagues in the intelligence community laying out why he believed the uranium-purchase agreement "probably is a hoax."
  • On February 5, 2003, in an address to the United Nations Security Council, Powell said: "What we're giving you are facts and conclusions based on solid intelligence. I will cite some examples, and these are from human sources." As it turned out, however, two of the main human sources to which Powell referred had provided false information. One was an Iraqi con artist, code-named "Curveball," whom American intelligence officials were dubious about and in fact had never even spoken to. The other was an Al Qaeda detainee, Ibn al-Sheikh al-Libi, who had reportedly been sent to Eqypt by the CIA and tortured and who later recanted the information he had provided. Libi told the CIA in January 2004 that he had "decided he would fabricate any information interrogators wanted in order to gain better treatment and avoid being handed over to [a foreign government]."

The false statements dramatically increased in August 2002, with congressional consideration of a war resolution, then escalated through the mid-term elections and spiked even higher from January 2003 to the eve of the invasion.

like jim said, this is far from new information for most of us, but it's a big step forward to have the lies both carefully sourced and chronicled, and an even bigger step that some in the usually-comatose u.s. news media are paying attention, unlike the embarrassing silence over sibel edmonds... even as recently as 20 years ago, documented evidence like this would produce a massive public outcry for the wholesale resignation of the bush administration... how have we managed to become so anesthetized in so short a time...?

How the Pentagon planted a false story and a true hero thwarted it

more goodies you won't see in u.s. news outlets...

How the Pentagon planted a false story
By Gareth Porter

WASHINGTON - Senior Pentagon officials, evidently reflecting a broader administration policy decision, used an off-the-record Pentagon briefing to turn the January 6 US-Iranian incident in the Strait of Hormuz into a sensational story demonstrating Iran's military aggressiveness, a reconstruction of the events following the incident shows.

The initial press stories on the incident, all of which can be traced to a briefing by deputy assistant secretary of defense for public affairs in charge of media operations, Bryan Whitman, contained similar information that has since been repudiated by the navy itself.

[...]

Just two weeks earlier, on December 19, the USS Whidbey Island, an amphibious warship, had fired warning shots after a small Iranian boat allegedly approached it at high speed. That incident had gone without public notice.

With the reports from Fifth Fleet commander Vice Admiral Kevin Cosgriff in hand early that morning, top Pentagon officials had all day Sunday, January 6, to discuss what to do about the encounter in the Strait of Hormuz. The result was a decision to play it up as a major incident.

The decision came just as President George W Bush was about to leave on a Middle East trip aimed in part at rallying Arab states to join the United States in an anti-Iran coalition.

That decision in Washington was followed by a news release by the commander of the Fifth Fleet on the incident at about 4am Washington time on January 7. It was the first time the Fifth Fleet had issued a news release on an incident with small Iranian boats.

The release reported that the Iranian "small boats" had "maneuvered aggressively in close proximity of [sic] the Hopper [the lead ship of the three-ship convoy]." But it did not suggest that the Iranian boats had threatened the boats or that it had nearly resulted in firing on the Iranian boats.

On the contrary, the release made the US warships handling of the incident sound almost routine. "Following standard procedures," the release said, "Hopper issued warnings, attempted to establish communications with the small boats and conducted evasive maneuvering."

The release did not refer to a US ship being close to firing on the Iranian boats, or to a call threatening that US ships would "explode in a few minutes", as later stories would report, or to the dropping of objects into the path of a US ship as a potential danger.

That press release was ignored by the news media, however, because later that Monday morning, the Pentagon provided correspondents with a very different account of the episode.

At 9am, Barbara Starr of CNN reported that "military officials" had told her that the Iranian boats had not only carried out "threatening maneuvers", but had transmitted a message by radio that "I am coming at you" and "you will explode". She reported the dramatic news that the commander of one boat was "in the process of giving the order to shoot when they moved away".

CBS News broadcast a similar story, adding the detail that the Iranian boats "dropped boxes that could have been filled with explosives into the water". Other news outlets carried almost identical accounts of the incident.

The source of this spate of stories can now be identified as Bryan Whitman, the top Pentagon official in charge of media relations, who gave a press briefing for Pentagon correspondents that morning. Although Whitman did offer a few remarks on the record, most of the Whitman briefing was off the record, meaning that he could not be cited as the source.

a similar routine mid-december encounter passes without notice... the decision to "play up" the 6 january incident was made on a sunday in washington to coincide with the start of bush's middle east trip... on monday morning, the fifth fleet commander issues an unprecedented press release, calling attention to the routine nature of the encounter... do you suppose fifth fleet commander, vice admiral kevin cosgriff, chose to be the spoiler, deliberately stepping in to avoid wwIII, scotching the rest of his military career, but showing us all what heroes are really made of...? methinks the vice admiral knew exactly what he was doing and, per the previous post, i would firmly place him at that white house conference table...

The most in-your-face criminal gang the world has ever seen

all effort to maintain even a pretense of accountability and respect for the rule of law has been abandoned...
The White House has acknowledged recycling its backup computer tapes of e-mail before October 2003, raising the possibility that many electronic messages — including those pertaining to the CIA leak case — have been taped over and are gone forever.

The disclosure came minutes before midnight Tuesday under a court-ordered deadline that forced the White House to reveal information it has previously refused to provide.

Among the e-mails that could be lost are messages swapped by any White House officials involved in discussions about leaking a CIA officer's identity to reporters.

Before October 2003, the White House recycled its backup tapes "consistent with industry best practices," according to a sworn statement by a White House aide.

Backup tapes are the last line of defense for saving electronic records.

Separately, the statement reveals the extent to which the White House is apparently unable to answer how many e-mails are missing from White House servers.

The White House "does not know if any e-mails were not properly preserved in the archiving process," said the statement by Theresa Payton, chief information officer for the White House Office of Administration. "We are continuing our efforts," said Payton, whose staff is responsible for the White House e-mail system.

If the e-mails were not saved, the White House might have violated two laws requiring preservation of documents that fall into the categories of federal records or presidential records.

yeah... well... ok... it was abandoned quite some time ago...

my fantasy...

scene: fade-in to white house conference room where george bush, dick cheney, and their senior staff aides are seated along one side of the table... across from them are seated select senior members of congress, the military, and the judiciary, who have jointly requested the meeting...

congressional spokesperson: thank you, mr. president for agreeing to meet with us and for gathering your senior officials on such short notice... let me get right to the point... we are here to demand your resignation and that of the key members of your administration... we are doing this under the full authority of the united states constitution... the supreme court has affirmed that we have this authority, and the joint chiefs of staff have agreed to provide us with the full backing of the united states military... our intent is not a takeover, but rather to restore the rule of law, adherence to the constitution with its mandated balance of powers, and the responsibility for accountability and oversight that the constitution has vested in congress... a caretaker administration has been appointed and is waiting to assume the day-to-day functions of running the government until such time as national elections can be scheduled, no later than six months from today... should you choose not to comply with this request, mr. president, the joint chiefs of staff have authorized the senior military provost marshall to detain you and your officials so that the caretaker government can be installed...

hey...! it's MY fantasy, and i'm stickin' to it...

just for fun, besides george and dick, who else would you want seated at the table...?

"It’s time to confront the darker reality that we are lying to ourselves"

frank rich in the nyt...
Our humanity has been compromised by those who use Gestapo tactics in our war. The longer we stand idly by while they do so, the more we resemble those “good Germans” who professed ignorance of their own Gestapo. It’s up to us to wake up our somnambulant Congress to challenge administration policy every day. Let the war’s last supporters filibuster all night if they want to. There is nothing left to lose except whatever remains of our country’s good name.

yes, it's a strong statement from someone who has been consistently strong in his views, and i applaud him for it... i agree that it is most definitely way, WAY past time to stop standing idly by, but i would add one very important element to mr. rich's focus on the iraq war and torture...

the united states is in a deadly critical, exceptionally serious constitutional crisis that threatens the very existence of our democratic republic and everything it stands for... no matter how unrealistic or far-fetched it may seem, we simply MUST turn these criminals out of office BEFORE the next election (and most certainly BEFORE the new president is inaugurated), and seize that opportunity to roll back the unconstitutional mechanisms of unfettered power they have put in place...

BooMan: "Impeach or Armageddon"

booman has a fairly comprehensive run-down on the run-up to what increasingly looks like war on iran, unless, of course, we bestir ourselves to toss the bastards out...
Considering how far Iran is away from actually having a nuclear bomb and how close we are to having a new administration, we cannot allow this attack on Iran to go on in the next 16 months. We can't hope that Condi Rice will resign, or that her resignation will prevent an attack. We have to impeach, convict, and remove this administration. Don't say it can't be done. It has to be done. Or it's Armageddon.

booman also has what i believe to be a pretty accurate perspective on darth and his evil...
[T]he word has definitely gotten out that Dick Cheney is frothing at the mouth to make more evil. There's not a constant amount of evil in the world, you know. It's not a zero-sum game. Cheney makes evil where evil did not previously exist. And his brush-clearing sidekick is too eager to go along.

george, darth and the other evil minions simply have to go... it's incomprehensible to me that their occupation of the white house continues, nearly seven years after the illegal 12 december 2000 scotus decision...

Dear Senator Feingold

from an email i just received from russ feingold asking me to support his censure resolutions and the appointment of a special prosecutor...
As you know, last Sunday I proposed censure resolutions aimed at holding the President, Vice President and administration officials responsible for misconduct relating to the war in Iraq and for their repeated assaults on the rule of law. I am pleased to announce that Congressman Maurice Hinchey has joined me in this effort. Thanks to the input of thousands of Progressive Patriots like you, we plan to formally introduce these censure resolutions later this week. But I still need your feedback. So if you haven’t already, please let me know your thoughts on this vitally important issue. I will be sure to keep you posted as we move forward.

for what it's worth, i sent him my thoughts, as requested...
Dear Senator Feingold,

I believe that the United States is in the midst of the most serious constitutional crisis in its history. The steps taken by the Bush administration to accrue unfettered executive power have our country poised on the brink of becoming an authoritarian state, and I do not feel that I exaggerate in the least. On the contrary, I am probably understating the reality.

Every single day that the current occupants of the White House remain in power is another day for them to advance their radical agenda of invalidating the separation of powers. The United States is already effectively being governed from one branch of government, the executive branch, which has become so politicized and infiltrated with administration loyalists as to be nearly unrecognizable.

Even over and above Iraq (which, heaven only knows, is a daily tragedy of staggering proportions), there is no greater priority than stopping the Bush administration, a feat that, it should be obvious by now, can ONLY be accomplished by their removal from office. And even THAT, Senator, will be insufficient unless and until the levers of unrestrained executive power have been not only rolled back but officially REPUDIATED, PRIOR to the next president taking office on 20 January 2009.

Of course, Senator Feingold, I support your censure resolutions and your call for an independent prosecutor. However, what I am desperately HOPING you will do is to stand up and, with all the force and dignity of your office and your outstanding Senatorial career, speak out on this grave crisis, name it for what it is, and rally those of us who are so desperate for leadership from our elected officials to the cause of saving our constitutionally-based, democratic republic. I can tell you, Senator, there are many thousands of us who would be at your side in a heartbeat were you to issue such a call.

I realize that impeachment proceedings must be initiated in the House Judiciary Committee. I am not at all sure, unfortunately, that we have the luxury of enough time to let that process run its course. What I envision, unrealistic or not, is a mass convergence of citizens on Washington calling for the President, the Vice President, and all members of the Cabinet to resign. Yes, Senator, I do believe we are at that point.

Please take my thoughts as they were intended - a very serious cry for help as I watch our country being dismembered at the hands of those who have forsaken their sworn duty to protect and defend the United States Constitution.

Best regards,

if you would like, you can send your thoughts to russ at this email address...

Good lord, I SO identify with this!

buhdydharma at daily kos took the words right out of my mouth...
I'm tired

I'm tired of fighting.

I'm tired of writing impeachment diaries.

I'm tired of fighting folks about me writing impeachment diaries.

I'm tired of people attacking me personally for writing Impeachment diaries.

I am tired of people questioning my character.

I am tired of people calling other people traitors.

I'm tired of folks saying I call people traitors when I never have.

I am tired of people taking what a small percentage of proponents of impeachment have said and ascribing it to all proponents of impeachment.

I am tired of folks trying to twist every word I write into a way to attack me for what I write.

I'm tired of people flaming impeachment advocates....and then acting surprised when they get flamed back.

I'm tired of asking people what their plan is to hold Bushco accountable and not getting an answer.

I'm tired of people arguing that the 'right' thing to do is let the clock run out and let the criminals head on out to the book tour.

I'm tired of people posting what they fear might happen if we actually do something to oppose Bushco.

I'm tired of people not realizing that the fear they feel is the fear that Bushco has 'installed' to quash resistance to them.

I'm tired of people saying they are tired of impeachment dairies.

I'm tired of impeachment diaries too.

I'm tired of not knowing what else to do but to write impeachment diaries.

I'm also tired of the 'press' blindly accepting Republican spin as fact.

I'm tired of the press ignoring Bushco's crimes.

I'm tired of Bushco committing new crimes daily.

I'm tired of our President thinking and acting like he is above the law.

I'm tired of subpoenas being ignored.

I'm tired of justice being obstructed.

I'm tired of the politicization of every branch and department of our government.

I'm tired of being spied on by my government.

I'm tired of my government kidnapping people.

I am tired of my government torturing people.

I'm tired of my government imprisoning people without trials.

I'm tired of my government ignoring real terrorists, both at home and abroad.

I'm tired of my government invading other countries.

I'm tired of war profiteering

I'm tired of Iraqi children getting blown up.

I'm tired of their parents getting blown up.

I'm tired of my government creating a mercenary army to blow them up.

I'm tired of the threats on Iran.

I'm tired of our rights being stolen.

I'm tired of the Constitution being destroyed.

I'm tired of thinking about Giuliani with Unitary Executive Powers.

I'm tired of thinking about Hillary with Unitary Executive Powers.

I'm tired of impeachment diaries too.

I'm tired of not knowing what else to do but to write impeachment diaries.

yeah, oh, yeah... when i get down to it, there really ISN'T much left for me to do except write about impeachment, or, as i often frame it, getting those bastards out of office by the most expeditious - and legal - means at our disposal... there is simply no other priority as critical or more worthy of our time and energy...

""The same folks that are bombing innocent people in Iraq are the ones who attacked us on Sept. 11"

the man has truly lost his grip...
President Bush, defending his troop surge in Iraq, insisted Thursday that the insurgents attacking US troops in Iraq "are the same ones who attacked us on Sept. 11."

Bush was speaking at a White House press conference. Asked for proof of the connection between insurgents in Iraq and the 9/11 hijackers, Bush said both had pledged their allegiance to Osama bin Laden.

"The same folks that are bombing innocent people in Iraq are the ones who attacked us on Sept. 11," Bush said.

[...]

Bush also refused to rule out committing more troops to Iraq in the future, saying he would not publicly speculate about what he will do when Gen. David Petraeus delivers a final report on the surge's progress in September.

he's gotta go... cheney's gotta go... the cabinet's gotta go... resignation, impeachment, whatever...

Atrios outs David Broder who calls for presidential accountability - in 1993!

atrios unearths a david broder column from 3 january 1993... it's as good a find as anyone has made in quite some time, and, given the author, couldn't be more timely... go read it in full here...

a teaser...

Until this society is prepared to condemn and to shun those who abuse their governmental authority, there is no point in having special prosecutors or others trying to squeeze these cases through the criminal justice system.

We don't need more convictions and pardons of government officials. We need scorn and shame for those who violate their oaths of office. And that is a penalty that the American people -- and only the American people -- can invoke.

i think there's quite a few of us who would agree with mr. broder...

"Pissing on your leg and telling you it's raining"

kagro x...
[F]ollowing George W. Bush's pardon (let's be honest) of Scooter Libby, a Republican's admonition to let anything play out in court ought to be regarded as worth exactly squat.

So long as George W. Bush wields the pardon pen, there are no courts. And any Republican who tells you otherwise is pissing on your leg and telling you it's raining.

the ramifications of bush's commutation of libby's sentence are so huge, i'm still attempting to digest them... i've obviously still got a lot more digestin' to do...
