Back in San Jose and dead on my butt

the drive to the ontario airport this morning was smooth and fast... i was amazed at the volume of traffic on the riverside freeway headed in to la at 5 a.m... bumper-to-bumper and slow-and-go at that time of the morning was strange to see to say nothing of the sinking feeling i get with fossil-fuel burners as far as the eye can see...

the single line for security at the ontario airport had well over 150 people standing in it and cooling their heels when i rolled in at 5:45 and it took me 35+ minutes to get through... if that's the usual tsa morning routine there, they've got a serious problem... gate agents were making continuous pages for passengers who hadn't yet boarded departing flights who were no doubt somewhere in the line... fortunately, i left myself enough time...

i'm in the san jose airport waiting for my friend's flight to arrive from lax in about 20 minutes...

another light posting day, i'm afraid...

Gerald Celente appears on RT & predicts a global youth revolt and cyberwar

ok, i saw this and folded... it's a "gotta post"...
Gerald Celente, the founder of the Trends Research Institute, believes that the Internet will empower the youth of the world to unite to start a revolution that will overthrow the existing deadlocked elitist establishment. He predicts that in 2011 every citizen is going to realize that the Great Recession the world has been living through is actually a Great Depression, because the American establishment is "running out of schemes."

My biggest concern with the Arizona shooting - the internet

yes, violence targeting anybody, be they ordinary u.s. citizens, elected officials of our or any other government, or innocent civilians in the endless "war on terror," is something to be condemned and, by all means, prevented... but, as glenn points out, we should be hyper-attentive to our fear-mongering government using the excuse of any and all such horrific events - as well as the non-horrific ones, e.g. wikileaks - to further advance the national security state...
There has been much talk over the last several days, in the wake of the Arizona shooting, about attempts by some citizens to instill physical fear in elected officials. That's a worthwhile and necessary topic, but the fear that government officials are attempting to instill in law-abiding, dissenting citizens is far more substantial and sustained, and deserves much more attention than it has received.

why do i raise the specter of the national security state in connection with the arizona shooting...? here's our esteemed fbi director, robert mueller, speaking in tucson...
“The ubiquitous nature of the Internet means that not only threats but also hate speech and other inciteful speech is much more readily available to individuals than quite clearly it was 8 or 10 or 15 years ago,” Mr. Mueller said. “That absolutely presents a challenge for us, particularly when it results in what would be lone wolves or lone offenders undertaking attacks.”

fueled by wikileaks, obama's proposed internet id for everybody and now this, i predict a crackdown on internet freedom like nothing we've yet seen...

Odds & ends, Sunday, 9 January

let's hear it for mcclatchy and its spot-on indictment of the u.s. news media for abandoning wikileaks...

i've been meaning to post a note about one of my favorites and a first-class character in his own right, joe bageant, who recently revealed his bout with terminal cancer but i think i may have been struggling with a little bit of denial...

in a previous life i was a frequent visitor to acapulco and even lived and operated a business there so it's particularly painful to read news like this...

Is the U.S. complicit in Iran civil aviation disasters?

another sad state of affairs exacerbated by the foreign policy of the hegemon...
An IranAir passenger jet carrying around 100 people crashed as it was making an emergency landing Sunday in a snowstorm in the country's northwest and broke into several pieces, killing 70 of those on board, Iranian media reported. The others survived with light injuries.

[...]

Iran has a history of frequent air accidents blamed on its aging aircraft and poor maintenance. IranAir's fleet includes Boeing and Airbus aircraft, many of them bought before the country's 1979 Islamic Revolution, which led to a cutoff in ties between the two nations.

Iranian airlines, including those run by the state, are chronically strapped for cash, and maintenance has suffered, experts say. U.S. sanctions prevent Iran from updating its 30-year-old American aircraft and make it difficult to get European spare parts or planes as well. The country has come to rely on Russian aircraft, many of them Soviet-era planes that are harder to get parts for since the Soviet Union's fall.

i posted on this topic back in july 2009 along with a timeline of iran air crashes... you can bet that you won't hear any outcry in the u.s. about the continuing loss of life that is at least indirectly connected to sanctions on iran...

Keith on the insanity of our guns and violence-obsessed society

our nation needs to face the fact that a dedication to endless war, fueled by fear-mongering and the bottomless greed of super-rich elites who are totally committed to manipulating us by any means at their disposal, can expect this kind of horror... we must also remember that our nation is perpetrating this same kind of horror elsewhere in the world and that what goes around, comes around...
