Back in the USSR

Thu Mar 24th, 2005

i'm at dfw after the all-night flight from buenos aires, only two hours out of immigration and customs, waiting for my next flight, being bombarded by terri schiavo and the rest of the cnn world view in the gate area, and already hating being back in this scarey country...

for some reason that i can't put my finger on, i always feel an EDGE in the u.s... i never noticed it really until the past few years... it's particularly noticeable when coming from a place like BaAs where, as i laughingly like to say, the edges are rounded...

i wish cnn international was more readily available on u.s. cable networks... it ain't terrific but it beats the shit out of the domestic version... i think they realize they have a MUCH more informed and discriminating audience and don't dare pander to voyeurism, sleaze, and schmaltz QUITE as much...

i breezed through the bookstore on the concourse and was waylaid, naturally... i can almost never make it out of a bookstore alive... i walked out with a copy of maureen dowd's big, fat run-down on the bush clan... anybody read it...? what didja think...?
