Viguerie: "The party leadership should resign immediately"

for some reason, newsmax emails began landing in my spam folder a couple of months ago... since i always check my spam folder for things that may have fallen in there by mistake, i always read - and usually chuckle - at the subject headers of the newsmax emails before deleting them... a surprising number push "miracle medical remedies" and get-rich-quick schemes, but there are also the usual run of headlines such as "Hillary's Antics Could Still Save the GOP" and "Bennett, Lieberman Applaud Hillary’s New Voice"... this one from richard viguerie, however, got me curious enough to open it...
Viguerie: Republican Leaders Must Resign

The Republican Party must replace its leadership or conservatives will continue to withhold support and the GOP will face “disaster” in November, leading conservative activist Richard A. Viguerie declared.

“Republican Party leaders must resign,” said Viguerie, publisher of ConservativeHQ.com and the pioneer of political direct mail.

[...]

He named a number of prominent Republicans, including President Bush, Karl Rove, party chairman Mike Duncan, House Minority Leader John Boehner, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, former Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott, and House Minority Whip Roy Blunt.

[...]

“For things to change, for conservatives to be justified in once again giving our contributions, our volunteer efforts, our energy, and votes to the GOP, the party must clean house. The party leadership should resign immediately.

[...]

Viguerie has this message for the current GOP leadership: “For the future of the Republican Party, for America, and the cause of freedom: Go!”

well, i've been calling for mass resignations since the officially-sponsored ethnic cleansing of new orleans following hurricane katrina, not to save the republican party, to be sure, but to save my country, but, hey... i'll take it any way i can get it...

Remember the good ol' days when Bush would actually withdraw his support?

ya gotta love it... a master big-mouth accusing others of big-mouthery...
During a CNN appearance today, Lott said that he was “concerned” that the Republicans “had this frank discussion with the president, which could have been very positive, and then they came out and started talking about it.”

“[T]hey broke one of the cardinal rules, in my opinion,” Lott said. “If they’d have kept their mouths shut, their value of speaking candidly would have been worth a lot more.”

ok, trent... i hear ya, baby... 'course, YOU never did anything stupid...
Tremendous political controversy ensued following remarks Lott made on December 5, 2002 at the 100th birthday party of Sen. Strom Thurmond of South Carolina. Thurmond ran for President of the United States in 1948 on the Dixiecrat (or States' Rights) ticket. Lott said:
"When Strom Thurmond ran for president, we voted for him. We’re proud of it. And if the rest of the country had followed our lead, we wouldn’t have had all these problems over the years, either"

Once reported in newspapers and television, calls for his resignation as majority leader from both ends of the political spectrum grew. Some Democrats and Republicans considered the remark inappropriate. Al Gore called the statement "fundamentally racist". Many conservative groups and media were quick to distance themselves from Lott and criticize the incident.

[...]

Under pressure from Senate colleagues, and having lost the support of the White House, Lott resigned as Senate Republican Leader on December 20, 2002.

and, amazingly enough, the guy is still given a forum to jack his jaws...

Political and current events satire

juan cole has a post up with some wry and sadly ironic humor... a sample...
Item: Attorney General Alberto Gonzales presided over the firing of 8 federal attorneys, apparently for political reasons. His chief of staff, Kyle Sampson, has resigned over the scandal. The attorney general maintained that he presided over 130,000 employees and couldn't know everything that was going on. Senator Charles Schumer is threatening to subpoena Mr. Gonzales for an investigation.

In other news, Congress demanded that Mr. Gonzales resign for having authorized the use of torture in contravention of the US constitution and of the Geneva Conventions, to which the US is a signatory. "His influential memo led to the Guantanamo and Abu Ghraib scandals that have forever besmirched the fair name of the United States," Senator Trent Lott lamented.

go read the rest for yourself...
