yeah, i know, it's been a long time since i've done any photoblogging... for one thing, my canon camera developed some "issues" and, even though it was still more or less useable, i took it offline because it wasn't really doing the job... then i got a new sony which is really quite a whizzy camera but i didn't get into using it until just the past few days because it's got so much whiz that i had to take some time to learn how to operate it...
anywayz, here's some high desert sunset photos from this evening...
the old camera was able to capture some of the subtler colors pretty well and i still have to figure out what settings to use on this camera to do the same...
the second of my four flights was delayed arriving in frankfurt yesterday so i had to spend last night there... after my initial pique (united basically slammed the aircraft door in my face after i huffed and puffed up the concourse trying to make the san fran flight), i decided that a decent room, dinner, a good night's sleep, a nice, hot shower and a good b'fast outweighed the inconvenience and gave me a good start today for the remaining two flights... my son picked me up and i was treated to a high desert sunset that was nothing short of magnificent...
the dust and pollution don't exactly make for a healthy environment but they sure do offer up some nice sunsets and anyone who follows this blog knows what a sucker i am for sunsets...
Sunset over the Hindu Kush Mountains 5:23 p.m., Sunday, 4 October 2009 Kabul, Afghanistan
sorry... i can't help myself... there's just something about sunsets and moonrises that render me completely helpless when i have a camera available...
there's something about sunsets on the high desert... some are only pretty good, some are pretty damn good, and some are positively fan-frigging-tastic...
it's been entirely too long since i've posted any pics... tonight with the full moon coming up at sunset seemed like a good time to break the drought...
Saturday photo and videoblogging from last Sunday and yesterday
yes, folks, it's a TWO-COUNTRY bonus...!
last sunday, my landlady and i went to one of my favorite spots, feria mataderos, in barrio mataderos, buenos aires... i wanted to pick up a few things to bring back to the states and also to soak in the essence of argentina one more time before flying out the next day... after enjoying the fair proper, we adjourned to an adjacent park where there is always plenty of things going on, people enjoying picnics, pick-up games of fĂștbol, and, of course, music, always music... off to the side, there were a bunch of folks dancing murga and i managed to get a decent video clip...
Murga is a form of popular musical theatre performed primarily in Montevideo, Uruguay during the Carnival season. A different sort of Murga groups ... also operate in Argentina (mainly during Buenos Aires Carnival), though to a much lesser extent, and the main difference is that Argentinian murga centers around dancing, and not vocals, as Uruguayan murga does.
now that i'm back in northern nevada, i'm enjoying the regular first-rate sky show of clouds and colors at sunset... here's a few from last evening...
if you look closely at both photos above and below, you will be able to see faint traces of turquoise and pink in the cloud formation...
and, of course, what would a northern nevada photoblogging session, particularly posted by ME, be without a sunset...?
Post-thunderstorm sunset, high desert, 8:16 p.m. PDT, 30 May
towards later afternoon, i noticed some thunderheads building up over the eastern sierra foothills... they didn't look too serious, but they were nice to see after the endless procession of sunny, dry, and windy days that are the norm around here... then, to my surprise, lo and behold, for about 45 minutes between 7 and 8, we had an honest-to-god thunderstorm, lightning flashing, thunder booming, fat raindrops falling, and even a little hail... naturally, the temperature dropped about 15 degrees as well... i stuck my nose out the back door after it was over to smell the wet sage, one of my all-time favorite smells, before heading back inside to - where else? - the laptop... suddenly, one of the grandsons was banging on my door, hollering, "grandpa, grandpa, come see the sunset..." so, here ya are... enjoy...
ok, it's been a while since i've bored you with sunset pics...
i was sitting here, behind my laptop (where else?), when i looked out the window and saw some amazing cloud formations bathed in vivid sunset colors in progress.. as you know, with sights like that, you have to grab the moment, so i did, and raced outside with my camera...
the wind has been blowing all afternoon here in the high desert and, for a while there, looked like it was blowing in a storm... darks clouds rushed by and were still darkening the eastern sky when the setting sun caught them from below... the pic is looking roughly north-northeast with the sun below the horizon about 45 degrees to the left... nice, huh...?
it's been raining off and on for a week... today, it rained almost all day, and, for a couple of hours, rained as hard as i've seen it rain in a long, long time... the backyard very nearly became a swimming pool and the poor box turtle was hugging the side of the house, trying to stay out of the rising water... but, this evening, as happens often here in buenos aires, there was another world class sunset... the forecast is calling for mostly cloudy tomorrow, but, after a sunset like this one, i can deal with it...
