Sunday high desert sunset photoblogging

yeah, i know, it's been a long time since i've done any photoblogging... for one thing, my canon camera developed some "issues" and, even though it was still more or less useable, i took it offline because it wasn't really doing the job... then i got a new sony which is really quite a whizzy camera but i didn't get into using it until just the past few days because it's got so much whiz that i had to take some time to learn how to operate it...

anywayz, here's some high desert sunset photos from this evening...

Photobucket

Photobucket

the old camera was able to capture some of the subtler colors pretty well and i still have to figure out what settings to use on this camera to do the same...

Sunday photoblogging: the last of the fall flowers and a surprise

i was deadheading the orange coneflower in the front garden patch late this afternoon so the remaining blossoms would have a chance to bask in all their glory before the hard frost hits that's expected around tuesday or wednesday...

Photobucket

i lifted up the stems and blossoms and, lo and behold, what did i find...!

Photobucket

yes, a clutch of hatched quail eggs... there are a ton of quail in the area but it was amazing to find them here, particularly given that the nest is right next to the front porch and the parents had to sneak in and out without being seen... they did a right good job of not being discovered...

Saturday photoblogging (from Friday)

yeah, i know... i haven't been doing much photo posting lately... guess i've been preoccupied...

however, a late afternoon, high desert thunderstorm yesterday produced rare full twin rainbows that i just had to share... not having a wide-angle lens, i was only able to capture each end but i think you get the idea...

It's a Saturday

and an absolutely gorgeous late summer afternoon here in the high desert...

unfortunately, the rain of shit shows no signs of stopping...

House Republicans Whittle Down $447 Billion American Jobs Act to $11 Billion

S&P’s Chambers Sees One-in-Three Chance of Another U.S. Credit Downgrade

Obama: All Americans must pay fair share to cut deficit

that last one is a real hoot... we should ALL be expected to pay a "fair share" of the mess we've been dragged into by appallingly expensive, illegal wars based on lies, a bloated defense budget that is beyond shameful supporting an empire of 800 military bases around the globe, banksters who have been repeatedly been rewarded for defrauding the global economic system through a never-ending round of rip-offs, mega-corporations that have artfully abdicated any responsibility for contributing to the common good by paying no taxes, and a health care system that worships obscene profit and has nothing to do with "health"...? i don't think so...

other than all that, it's still a gorgeous saturday...

Saturday photoblogging - back in the high desert

the second of my four flights was delayed arriving in frankfurt yesterday so i had to spend last night there... after my initial pique (united basically slammed the aircraft door in my face after i huffed and puffed up the concourse trying to make the san fran flight), i decided that a decent room, dinner, a good night's sleep, a nice, hot shower and a good b'fast outweighed the inconvenience and gave me a good start today for the remaining two flights... my son picked me up and i was treated to a high desert sunset that was nothing short of magnificent...

Happy Thanksgiving!

if kosovars celebrated thanksgiving, i imagine it would look a little bit like this...

Photobucket

i'm working today although i'd rather be back in reno sharing thanksgiving dinner with the family... oh, well... i fly out tomorrow and will be glad to be out of this cold rain/snow mix and back in the warm springtime of argentina... unfortunately, that will only be a week and a half stint before i will indeed be back in the high desert winter...

Heading back to the southern hemisphere

it's been unusually hot with equally unusual calm winds and positively gorgeous for the past two weeks here in the high desert, but saturday put a stop to all that... it's been raining off and on since then and considerably cooler... all in all, more seasonable... a good time to head back south to an argentine springtime...! i can't wait to see the jacaranda in bloom...! i'll try to get it together to post some good photos...

More crazy weather - two feet of snow in Reno...!

i've seen some heavy snows in reno but nothing like what hit them yesterday... it was evidently one for the books, shattering snowfall records that have stood since 1918...

the photo below was taken by my son off the back deck of his house where, due to the intensity of the snow coming down, it's almost impossible to see houses on the next street... i pitched in with a fair amount of shoveling when i was there before the holidays and i'm sorry i wasn't there this time to help out... i did do quite a bit of shoveling at my friend's place in suburban d.c. week before last so i guess i haven't escaped entirely unscathed...

Photobucket

about 8 yesterday morning here in pristina, it started snowing so hard i thought it would be up to my waist in no time but it only lasted for less than 20 minutes...

i've got to figure something is happening with global climate change given the frequency and intensity of weather events seemingly happening everywhere...

Every time I come back from abroad around the holidays

i don't know quite what to make of it... this is the third time i've come back to the u.s. just before the holidays only to face heavy snow in the high desert... we woke up this morning to 8 inches and i was out shoveling the driveway shortly after 5 and just finished doing it again for the second time today... the snow seems to have tapered off for now, but the f'cast is calling for the possibility of more this evening followed by two more storms coming in from the pacific yet this week...

on the flip side, most of the time i was in kosovo and the entire time i was in macedonia, there was sunshine... prior to my arrival it had been nothing but rain and the rain started right up again after i left... ah, well...

Sunday photoblogging: early morning ridge-walking in the high desert

i haven't been getting any exercise since i got back from argentina and it's been gnawing at me... most of the places i like to walk here, i have to drive to get to and that's just plain annoying... for sure, i don't like walking up and down suburban streets lined with houses that are all desperately trying NOT to look alike... i can head up to the high desert ridges that surround the neighborhood and i've done that quite a number of times, altho', on a still-summer weekend, unless you get out about the time the sun comes up, the heat and the omnipresent wind kind of take the fun out of it... what takes the fun out of it even more is the #%$^&*@#$ 4-wheelers and dirt bikers that zoom all over the place, tearing up the vegetation, throwing up clouds of dust, belching fumes, and generating ear-shattering engine noise...

this morning, however, i decided to get out early and, as i was enjoying the cool and the quiet, i realized that this was the first time i had done this walk in the summer... all the other times, it's been late fall, winter or early spring... anyway, it was a real pleasure, and i must be sure to do it again soon...

here's some photos to soak up on a late summer afternoon...

PhotobucketPhotobucket

high desert vegetation, while plentiful, tends to be on the scrubby, understated side, and you have to get up close to appreciate just how lovely it is... the early morning light sets off these two quite nicely, don't you think...?

Photobucket

this is the 'burb where i live with my son his family when i'm in the u.s... yes, folks, it's definitely a suburb...

PhotobucketPhotobucket

nevada and the great basin are full of dry lake beds... there's one not too far from the house that we have to drive by on our way to and from town... in the photo on the left, you can also see how the off-roaders tear up the trails and, when it rains, the water creates gullies... the photo on the right is a close-up from the photo on the left showing vehicles lined up on the bed of the dry lake, preparing, i would assume, for some sort of rally...

Photobucket

unfortunately, besides generating a lot of environmental destruction and noise pollution, the off-roaders are also very heedless about their trash... the collection of garbage in this photo just so happens to lie at the bottom of the winter sledding hill... sigh...

Photobucket

this is a nasty, spiny, prickly little plant that, when the cold weather comes, will dry out and become a tumbleweed... however, if you look close, you can see that it's completely covered with the tiniest little purple blossoms... just goes to show ya, huh...?

While I was shoveling the driveway yesterday

this is what people living 50 miles east of us were dealing with...

Marilyn Newton/RGJ.com

Marilyn Newton/RGJ.com
Hundreds of homes remained under up to 8 feet of water Sunday as federal emergency workers were on their way to assess the flood damage caused when an irrigation canal’s earthen levee ruptured in Fernley early Saturday morning.

Cold weather was turning some of the water to ice, complicating plans to allow natural flows to move most of the water on to a federal wetland outside town. Fernley officials said they were considering using pumps to aid in that effort.

The levee break that occurred just after 4 a.m. on Saturday was repaired late in the day but as much as a square mile of the town was still under at least 2 feet of water.

i don't know about you folks, but, on seeing both those photos, i experienced massive deja vu...
