Nevada Sen. John Ensign announces resignation

Nevada Sen. John Ensign announced Thursday he will resign amid an ethics investigation, insisting he's done nothing wrong but saying he could no longer subject his family and constituents to further investigation.

Ensign said in a statement that he will send Vice President Joe Biden a letter Friday making the resignation official.

"While I stand behind my firm belief that I have not violated any law, rule, or standard of conduct of the Senate, and I have fought to prove this publicly, I will not continue to subject my family, my constituents, or the Senate to any further rounds of investigation, depositions, drawn out proceedings, or especially public hearings," he said. "For my family and me, this continued personal cost is simply too great."

Governor Sanford made a stunning admission at his news conference this afternoon that he has been having an extramarital affair with a "dear dear friend" in Argentina. The affair, he said, began "very innocently" but blossomed into "something much more than that."

"I've been unfaithful to my wife," Sanford said. "As a consequence, I hurt her, you all, my wife, my boys, my friends like Tom Davis. I hurt a lot of different folks. All I can say is that I apologize."

Sanford said he will resign as chairman of the Republican Governors' Association.

Sources in Washington and Nevada say Republican Sen. John Ensign, a rising star in the Republican Party considering a 2012 presidential bid will hold a press conference later today in which he will acknowledge an extramarital affair.

Ensign, a member of the Senate GOP leadership, flew back to his native Las Vegas today in anticipation of the public announcement, sources said, missing a vote considered key to the Nevada tourist industry.

Two senior GOP political strategists, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss the sensitive matter, said the announcement was imminent. They declined to say with whom Ensign had the affair.

In February 2002, Ensign took an unexplained two week leave of absence from the Senate citing "personal reasons."

When he returned from that respite, Ensign told the Las Vegas Sun that he was "not making any comments one way or the other. I'm just asking people to respect my privacy."

while you're chuckling over ensign's now tarnished star, consider the very low statistical odds of ANYONE being a las vegas native...!

Thee odds of failure on the Paulson plan are 100%. The Paulson plan will not create any jobs or help homeowners pay their bills. Instead it diverts $700 billion of taxpayer funds to failed banks that took excessive risks. The sheer size of the bailout will cause interest rates to rise, further adding to taxpayer woes.

Long term interest rates are already up a half point on news of this bill. They will rise more if it passes. How is that supposed to help homeowners?

Robbing taxpayers to pay failed banks cannot possibly work!

Paul O'Neil Is Against The Plan

Former Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill said today that our nation's leaders -- especially President Bush -- are "in a panic" and haven't thought through the $700 billion bailout plan in a rush to pass it by the end of the week.

"I don't think he understands or knows much about any of this and it shows. It is possible to re-liquefy the credit system without 'We the People' owning $700 billion worth of homes," he said.

BB&T Corp. Chief Executive Officer John Allison critiques the plan

Treasury "is totally dominated by Wall Street investment bankers" and "cannot be relied on to objectively assess" the impact of government policy on the financial industry, Allison wrote in a Sept. 23 letter to Congress.

The letter was verified by Bob Denham, a spokesman for BB&T, North Carolina's third-largest bank.

A letter to my Senators, my Congressman and Speaker Pelosi

written to senators harry reid, john ensign, congressman dean heller, and speaker nancy pelosi...

There is a reason why, when Senator Chris Dodd announced his intent to put a hold on the Senate FISA bill granting telecom immunity and later that he would filibuster the bill after Senator Harry Reid indicated he would allow it to come to the floor anyway, that Senator Dodd's popularity and campaign contributions soared.

My expectation, which i now see to have been pure fantasy, has always been that, sooner or later, our esteemed Congress would take serious, forceful steps to remedy a downhill luge run to an authoritarian state. I see now that I was mistaken.

Our country is in the grip of a critical constitutional crisis, perpetrated by the biggest gang of criminals to ever occupy the White House and the crimes are being aided and abetted by the members of Congress, Democratic and Republican alike.

This is not a plea for action. The purpose of this communication is to tell you that I have given up on you and your colleagues. I no longer believe that you are acting in the best interests of the citizens of the United States nor do I believe that you are upholding your sworn oath to preserve and protect the United States Constitution.

I hope you are all paying close attention. Our country is heading toward disaster and no one is at the helm.

Worthless, lying boilerplate from Senator John Ensign

i emailed both my senators and my congressman on sunday about how deeply i am distressed over the latest sell-out of our constitution...

Dear Senator Ensign,

I will say this once and once only.

That both the Senate and the House both approved sweeping new, almost certainly unconstitutional, surveillance powers as dictated by the White House, after it has become completely clear that the Bush administration has no respect for the rule of law or the principles upon which the United States was founded, is a clear betrayal of our country.

I see George Bush, Dick Cheney and their fellow criminals as the most dangerous leaders the United States has ever been cursed with, and desperately pray every single day for their removal. I have now added the United States Senate and House of Representatives to that list.

To say that I am disappointed is a huge understatement. To be blunt, I am both horrified and disgusted - horrified at the shredding of civil liberties and disgusted that our elected leaders support our national descent into fascism.

I can assure you that I understand the importance of preserving our civil liberties. This legislation would in no way change the manner in which domestic intelligence is collected and requires our intelligence community to create and maintain a document trail that is easily auditable. Additionally, this act requires both the Attorney General and the DNI to jointly authorize foreign targeting for individuals believed to be threats. Finally, it reaffirms Congress's oversight role by requiring the Attorney General to provide semi-annual reports to both the Senate and House Intelligence and Judiciary Committees.

The Failed Attorney General

During the hearing on his nomination as attorney general, Alberto Gonzales said he understood the difference between the job he held — President Bush’s in-house lawyer — and the job he wanted, which was to represent all Americans as their chief law enforcement officer and a key defender of the Constitution. Two years later, it is obvious Mr. Gonzales does not have a clue about the difference.

He has never stopped being consigliere to Mr. Bush’s imperial presidency. If anyone, outside Mr. Bush’s rapidly shrinking circle of enablers, still had doubts about that, the events of last week should have erased them.

[Sen. Arlen Specter (Pa.)] said before meeting with Gonzales on Thursday that "one day there will be a new attorney general, maybe sooner rather than later." He added later that he did not mean to imply that Gonzales should resign.

Rep. F. James Sensenbrenner Jr. (R-Wis.) said "there ought to be some heads that roll" over the FBI scandal, and he complained about "the ham-handed dismissal" of U.S. attorneys.

Sen. John Ensign (R-Nev.), whose U.S. attorney was one of those pushed out, told reporters: "I cannot tell you how upset I am at the Justice Department."
