Back in the U.S. - hassle free...!

i managed to grab nearly 7 hours of kinda-sorta decent sleep on the flight - at least as kinda-sorta decent as it gets when sleeping upright in an economy class airline seat - and, had i not forgotten my jacket that i had left tucked into the seat that i had to go back for, which then put me at the very end of the line at passport control, the trip has been smooth and uneventful so far... i'm waiting to board the second and last flight here in houston, basking in the good feeling of once again having passed through immigration and customs enforcement unscathed... after the experience two years ago june, i'm sure i'll never run the ice gauntlet again without trepidation cuz there'll always be a next time...

On the road again

in about 45 minutes i will be leaving my cozy little pied–à–terre here in buenos aires and taking a car service to the airport - again... my life seems to revolve around airports and i guess after so many years, i should be used to it... i'm looking forward to seeing my son and his family, especially the rambunctious grandsons, but i can't honestly say i'm at all excited about going back to the u.s... ah, well... i guess i can hold out for the month that i'll be there...

assuming i don't get hassled at u.s. customs, i'll be checking in tomorrow morning from the houston airport... chau for now...

How I spent my money while on an airport layover in Houston

i should never go within 100 yards of a bookstore... when i visited my daughter a few weeks ago in minneapolis, she gave me a gift certificate for the bookstore where she works and i cruised the aisles feeling like the winner of a shopping spree... my book stash was depleted and, since i was heading back to argentina soon, it wasn't only a very thoughtful gift, it was also very timely...

however...

i arrived here in the houston airport about two hours ago, facing a four-hour layover before the flight to buenos aires... i was taking my time, moseying to the concourse where the ba flight was scheduled, when i was lured in by the siren song of borders... not only did i not escape unscathed, i walked out with a full-price, HARDBOUND book... sigh...

my justification...?

it's a book that, i believe, deserves a place of honor on my bookshelf...

The Prosecution Of George W. Bush For Murder

by Vincent Bugliosi

yeah, i confess, i had already decided to buy the book at some point... why...? largely because i found out that both the publisher and mr. bugliosi have been spectacularly unsuccessful in booking mr. bugliosi on any of the traditional book-shilling venues, INCLUDING the daily show... what better recommendation could any book have...?

Traveling (yes, AGAIN) tomorrow

i'm flying to houston and then taking the overnight flight from there to buenos aires, back to my little place, where i'm anxious to see how my new afghan rug complements my living room... it will also give me some psychological space from the shredding of the constitution perpetrated today by our congress...

On the road

i'm sitting here at iah, george bush international airport in houston... i despise the place and that's not just because of the name... it's noisy, crowded, and, like so many other friggin' airports in these days of laptops and wireless, is ridiculously stingy with power outlets... that used to be much more of a problem for me until i got my current laptop a year and a half ago which, to my amazement, runs for well over five hours on battery power, and that's with half a dozen or more sites up concurrently and three of four different programs open... i know the intel centrino processor is considerably more frugal in its power needs than the pentium chip but i think the battery itself is also a lot better...

anywayz...

i got in here about an hour ago and have another five hours to sit on my ass before the flight leaves for buenos aires... aaaargh...

What an elected representative with INTEGRITY (and a REAL recovering alcoholic) looks like

talk about bringing the issue of voter fraud suppression down to earth... here you have not only THE definitive picture of what karl rove, scott jennings, susan ralston, alberto gonzales, monica goodling, kyle sampson, paul mcnulty, and the rest of the push-for-a-one-party-state crowd have been working so diligently to achieve, but also the clearest picture yet of what kind of a person it takes to stop it...
Against his doctor's advice, a stooped and feeble state Sen. Mario Gallegos Jr. (D) arrives at the Texas Capitol each day, just to make sure his chamber does not take up a bill that would require voters to produce identification at the polls.

[...]

Gallegos is putting his health at risk to block a measure he and others say could prevent many minorities and the elderly from taking part in elections in Texas.

[...]

The Republicans pushing the voter ID bill say illegal immigrants are voting in Texas elections and must be stopped. But Democrats say thousands of legal residents would lose the right to vote because they lack proper identification. Opponents of the measure -- including Gallegos, a Mexican American -- say minorities, the elderly and the poor are less likely than others to have driver's licenses or other documents.

Most of Gallegos's Houston-area constituents are black or Hispanic, and about a quarter of them live in poverty. About one in five speak little or no English.

Doctors say the senator, a recovering alcoholic, should be resting and should be within 100 miles of the hospital where he received the transplant. Austin is about 160 miles from the hospital in Houston.

Under what is known as the Luna Precedent, named for a lawmaker who was hospitalized in the 1990s, legislators can ask for 24 hours' notice that a bill is about to come up. Gallegos was given such notice early this month. But lawmakers can invoke the Luna Precedent only once during a session.

this is not only what a REAL recovering alcoholic looks like (as opposed to you-know-who), THIS is also what an elected representative of REAL integrity looks like, someone who will uphold the constitutional right to vote and never stop doing the job his constituents put him in office to do even if it means putting his own recovery from a liver transplant at risk... gallegos is not only a true hero but an authentic leader... we need lots more like him...

Halliburton's move (cont'd)

(Karen Tumulty posting on Time's Swampland blog...)
Is this about tax breaks? Getting beyond the reach of congressional subpoenas? And what about all that sensitive information that Halliburton has had access to? At a minimum, reincorporating in Dubai would mean that Halliburton will be paying less taxes to the U.S. Treasury, even as it collects billions from government contracts.

[...]

UPDATE: Henry Waxman is already planning to hold a hearing on this, an aide tells me.

like i said earlier...
there are implications here that i'm not sure i can make sense out of, but, my guess is, they're HUGE...

What are we to make of Halliburton moving its HQ to Dubai?

indeed... what ARE we to make of it...? they are forsaking their houston digs and moving right out of the u.s... how very interesting...
Halliburton to Move Headquarters To Dubai, Keeping Office in Houston

DUBAI -- U.S. oil services giant Halliburton Co. will shift its corporate headquarters from Houston to Dubai, Chief Executive Dave Lesar said Sunday.

Halliburton will maintain a corporate office in Houston, but the company will be controlled from its office in the United Arab Emirates, company spokeswoman Cathy Mann explained.

"Halliburton is opening its corporate headquarters in Dubai while maintaining a corporate office in Houston," Ms. Mann said in an email to the Associated Press. "The chairman, president and CEO will office from and be based in Dubai to run the company from the UAE." She clarified "he will work from and his office will be in Dubai."

jerome a paris, posting at daily kos, speculates...
For a company that gets such a significant portion of its income from the US government, this is quite a stunning move, to say the least. Unless it means that they expect that this revenue stream will end soon - or that there is so little oil left in the USA that this is no longer where business will be? Or that it is suddenly becoming safer to stay away from US law enforcement authorities?

yes, i agree... it is stunning news... there are implications here that i'm not sure i can make sense out of, but, my guess is, they're HUGE...
