Seymour Hersh reports on the U.S. trained terrorist group, the M.E.K.

from the new yorker...
[T]he Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) conducted training [at the Department of Energy’s Nevada National Security Site], beginning in 2005, for members of the Mujahideen-e-Khalq, a dissident Iranian opposition group known in the West as the M.E.K. The M.E.K. had its beginnings as a Marxist-Islamist student-led group and, in the nineteen-seventies, it was linked to the assassination of six American citizens. It was initially part of the broad-based revolution that led to the 1979 overthrow of the Shah of Iran. But, within a few years, the group was waging a bloody internal war with the ruling clerics, and, in 1997, it was listed as a foreign terrorist organization by the State Department.

[...]

The M.E.K.’s ties with Western intelligence deepened after the fall of the Iraqi regime in 2003, and JSOC began operating inside Iran in an effort to substantiate the Bush Administration’s fears that Iran was building the bomb at one or more secret underground locations.

[...]

Despite the growing ties, and a much-intensified lobbying effort organized by its advocates, M.E.K. has remained on the State Department’s list of foreign terrorist organizations—which meant that secrecy was essential in the Nevada training.

[...]

The sources I spoke to were unable to say whether the people trained in Nevada were now involved in operations in Iran or elsewhere. But they pointed to the general benefit of American support. “The M.E.K. was a total joke,” the senior Pentagon consultant said, “and now it’s a real network inside Iran. How did the M.E.K. get so much more efficient?” he asked rhetorically. “Part of it is the training in Nevada. Part of it is logistical support in Kurdistan, and part of it is inside Iran. M.E.K. now has a capacity for efficient operations than it never had before.”

glenn weighs in...

So let’s review what we have here. If this report is true, it means the U.S. Government actively trained a group that the U.S. Government itself legally categorizes as a “foreign terrorist organization,” a clear felony under U.S. law:

Whoever knowingly provides material support or resources to a foreign terrorist organization, or attempts or conspires to do so, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than 15 years, or both, and, if the death of any person results, shall be imprisoned for any term of years or for life.

That alone compels serious DOJ and Congressional investigations into these claims. Worse, this reportedly happened at the very same time that the U.S. aggressively prosecuted and imprisoned numerous Muslims for providing material support for groups on that list even though many of those prosecuted provided support that was far, far less than what the U.S. Government itself was providing to MEK. Meanwhile, right at this moment, America’s closest ally — Israel — is clearly a state sponsor of this designated Terrorist organization, providing training, funding and arms to it, and the U.S. may very well be as well (independent of all else, given that Israel is the largest recipient of U.S. aid, the U.S., at the very least, is financing a state sponsor of Terror).

[...]

Anyone in government, media and think tank circles who routinely and angrily accuse others of being “terrorists” or “supporters of terrorism” without recognizing that the U.S. and its closest allies are plainly and routinely guilty of that is just a rank propagandist. That the U.S., in the midst of its vaunted War on Terror, directly trained a group on its own Terrorist list — while its closest ally and Washington’s venerated former officials continue to provide ample support to that group even as it escalates its violent acts – is about as conclusive a demonstration of that fact as one could have conjured.

lies, manipulation of fact, hypocrisy... is this a great country or what...?

1 million on no fly list by summer

you have GOT to be f****** KIDDING me...!
More than 900,000 people are currently listed as suspected terrorists on the US government's "do not fly" list, and that number will grow to beyond 1 million by summer, says the American Civil Liberties Union.

"If there were a million terrorists in this country, our cities would be in ruins," Barry Steinhardt, director of the ACLU's Technology and Liberty Program, stated in a press release from the group. "The absurd bloating of the terrorist watch lists is yet another example of how incompetence by our security apparatus threatens our rights without offering any real security."

The ACLU has launched a new Web site to track the growth of the watch list, which it says includes thousands of innocent Americans, including prominent politicians and authors as well as people with common names.

The group says its count is "extrapolated from a September 2007 report by the Inspector General of the Department of Justice, which reported that the Terrorist Screening Center had over 700,000 names in its database as of April 2007, and that the list was growing by an average of over 20,000 records per month." As of Wednesday afternoon, the ACLU said there were about 917,500 names on the list.

once again, i take serious issue with the accusation of incompetence... read my lips, THERE IS NO INCOMPETENCE OPERATING HERE... this is a deliberate, conscious and completely purposeful effort, carefully crafted to instill fear in the population... as the list grows, you can be sure that someone you know - or you yourself - will be put on it, and won't even know until it's time to travel... as much traveling as i do, i already wonder if the next time i go to the airport will be the time i'm turned back... that little episode two years ago june of having my electronics seized at customs and not returned for three weeks, i can assure you, has left an indelible mark...

Suspected terrorist handling codes

just in case you ever wanted to know, here's the "handling codes" our government uses (PDF) for terrorist watch lists...
TERRORIST SCREENING CENTER

The Terrorist Screening Center (TSC) consolidates multiple terrorist watch lists into a single comprehensive database. The TSC ensures that state and local law enforcement officers have ready access to the information they need when they encounter a known
or suspected terrorist within the United States or at US borders.

When one of these subjects is queried through NCIC, NCIC will return a “possible terrorist alert”. The terrorist alert response assigns one of four handling codes to each entry. The four handling codes are:

Handling Code 1: WARNING – APPROACH WITH CAUTION. Arrest this individual. This individual is associated with terrorism. Once this individual is arrested, immediately contact the Terrorist Screening Center at (866) 872-9001 for additional information and direction. If you are a border patrol officer immediately call the NTC [National Targeting Center].

Handling Code 2: WARNING – APPROACH WITH CAUTION. Please detain this individual for a
reasonable amount of time for questioning. This individual is of investigative interest to law enforcement regarding association with terrorism. Immediately contact the Terrorist Screening Center at (866) 872-9001 for additional direction. (As appropriate, the TSC will facilitate an immediate response from an FBI Joint
Terrorism Task Force [JTTF] or other appropriate law enforcement entity.) If you are a border patrol officer immediately call the NTC.

Handling Code 3: DO NOT ALERT THIS INDIVIDUAL TO THIS NOTICE. The person queried through this search may be an individual identified by intelligence information as having possible ties with terrorism. Contact the Terrorism Screening Center at (866) 872-9001 for additional identifying information available to assist you in making this determination. DO NOT ARREST THIS INDIVIDUAL UNLESS THERE IS EVIDENCE OF A VIOLATION OF FEDERAL, STATE OR LOCAL STATUTES. Conduct a logical investigation using techniques authorized in you jurisdiction and ask probing questions to determine if this individual is identical to the person of law enforcement interest. WARNING – APPROACH WITH CAUTION. If you are a border patrol officer immediately call the NTC.

Handling Code 4: DO NOT ALERT THIS INDIVIDUAL TO THIS NOTICE. The person queried through this search may be an individual identified by intelligence information as having possible ties with terrorism. DO NOT ARREST THIS INDIVIDUAL UNLESS THERE IS EVIDENCE OF A VIOLATION OF FEDERAL, STATE OR LOCAL STATUTES. Attempt to obtain sufficient identification information to positively identify this individual in a manner consistent with the techniques authorized in you jurisdiction. You may be contacted at a later date and asked to forward this information. Note: If your contact with this individual warrants further investigation based on circumstances consistent with terrorist activity, contact the Terrorist Screening Center at (866) 872-9001. WARNING – APPROACH WITH CAUTION. If you are a border patrol officer immediately call the NTC. It is imperative that the officer contacting the suspect carefully read the caveats and adhere to the NCIC instructions.

Crankin' the propaganda handle on the axis of evil

you gotta wonder about the timing...

condi...
yeah, sure, we could talk, why not, as long as i'm going to be in the area anyway... and, oh, by the way, we still categorize your country as The Most Evil Country on the Face of the Planet...
great way to head off to a meeting, ain't it...?
The State Department has once again designated Iran as the world's leading state sponsor of terrorism, accusing the Islamic Republic of aiding extremists throughout the Middle East, particularly in Iraq.

Although the designation is not new, the release of the department's annual global survey of terrorism comes at a delicate moment — just days ahead of a possible meeting between Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Iran's top diplomat.

Rice could meet Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki when they both attend a weekend conference of Iraq's neighbors aimed at boosting stability in a nation where the report says terrorist attacks, some backed by Iran, killed more than 13,000 civilians in 2006.

so, here's the ap, once again, aiding and abetting bush administration propaganda, taking information from the government as a factual given, and providing zero context about the fact that the position of iran vis a vis the united states is considerably less black and white than the bush administration would like us to believe...

also, what's truly ironic is the hypocrisy of the u.s. issuing a global survey of terrorism and judging other countries on their support or non-support of terrorism when the u.s. itself is the biggest state sponsor of terrorism by a large margin... and don't think for one second that a large chunk of the rest of the world doesn't just cluck their tongues and shake their heads when a report like this comes out...

Soon, you'll have to be a "loyal bushie" to rent an apartment

abuse of the innocents in the surveillance state...

just wait... if we move into the next level with a national id, you won't be able to accomplish even the most minor transaction without being cross-checked against a "terrorist" list... then it will be a "watch" list... then it will be a "loyal bushie" list...

Private businesses such as rental and mortgage companies and car dealers are checking the names of customers against a list of suspected terrorists and drug traffickers made publicly available by the Treasury Department, sometimes denying services to ordinary people whose names are similar to those on the list.

The Office of Foreign Asset Control's list of "specially designated nationals" has long been used by banks and other financial institutions to block financial transactions of drug dealers and other criminals. But an executive order issued by President Bush after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks has expanded the list and its consequences in unforeseen ways. Businesses have used it to screen applicants for home and car loans, apartments and even exercise equipment, according to interviews and a report by the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights of the San Francisco Bay Area to be issued today.

"The way in which the list is being used goes far beyond contexts in which it has a link to national security," said Shirin Sinnar, the report's author. "The government is effectively conscripting private businesses into the war on terrorism but doing so without making sure that businesses don't trample on individual rights."

what they're doing is desensitizing people so, when we move to that next level, people will accept it as a matter of course... if they get away with firing u.s. attorneys for shaky political party loyalty, it will be here sooner than you think...
