The NYT: "It's subpoena time" - but only if they're enforced

as i posted the other day, i don't want to see any more wishy-washy behavior on this from congress... there's still a subpoena floating around out there with condi's name on it that she is completely ignoring... if subpoenas are going to be issued, it's time to put teeth in it, and, if that provokes the long-awaited constitutional crisis, by all means, let's get on with it...

For months, senators have listened to a parade of well-coached Justice Department witnesses claiming to know nothing about how nine prosecutors were chosen for firing. This week, it was the turn of Bradley Schlozman, a former federal attorney in Missouri, to be uninformative and not credible. It is time for Senator Patrick Leahy, the chairman of the Judiciary Committee, to deliver subpoenas that have been approved for Karl Rove, former White House counsel Harriet Miers and their top aides, and to make them testify in public and under oath.

If Congress is going to get to the bottom of the scandal, it has to get the testimony of Mr. Rove, his aides Scott Jennings and Sara Taylor, Ms. Miers and her deputy, William Kelley.

This noncooperation has gone on long enough. Mr. Leahy should deliver the subpoenas for the five White House officials and make clear that if the administration resists, Congress will use all available means to get the information it needs.

hey, i'm all for it... but congress had better reach down deep inside and find the guts to go through with it to the end and call this lawless administration into account... and, as for no oath and no transcript, not only no, but HELL NO...!

The White House has offered to make them available only if they do not take an oath and there is no transcript. Those conditions are a formula for condoning perjury, and they are unacceptable.

TOTALLY unacceptable...

So, it looks like Schlozman, the scumbag, might have been lying through his teeth

which, after watching his pathetic testimony yesterday, would not surprise me one iota... in fact, at one point, while watching him on cnn pipeline, i was actually hopping around the room, shouting, "you are LYING, you are a LIAR, LIAR, LIAR..." thank goodness no one was home at the time...

Former U.S. Attorney for New Mexico David Iglesias said he finds Bradley Schlozman's testimony about Craig Donsanto unbelievable.

Schlozman told a Senate Judiciary panel yesterday that while he was the interim U.S. Attorney in Missouri he brought four criminal voter fraud prosecutions on the eve of the 2006 midterm election after getting the go-ahead from Donsanto, the director of the election crimes branch at the department.

Iglesias was in touch with Donsanto up until the summer of 2006, just before Schlozman would have received approval to bring the indictments. Iglesias said he can’t imagine a scenario where Donsanto would have changed his mind on the department’s voter fraud policy.

The Justice Department did not respond to calls requesting comment. Donsanto did not reply to an email message, though Iglesias guesses he is not allowed to speak to the press.

My impression of Todd Graves from yesterday's hearing

to me, the difference in watching the testimony of brad schlozman and todd graves at yesterday's senate judiciary committee hearing was night and day... schlozman, in full-tilt gonzo mode, with his "i don't recall" responses, delivered in his horribly irritating voice, with sweat dripping from his forehead, couldn't have been a greater contrast to graves' straightforward, totally professional, yet completely relaxed manner, leavened with what is an obviously solid sense of humor... i was reminded of watching patrick fitzgerald at the press conference where he announced the libby indictment... i actually got tears in my eyes because i was so moved, after all the spinning and evasion of officials in the bush coterie, to hear someone so thoroughly professional, honestly and candidly making a statement and responding to questions... now that i think of it, i had the same reaction watching richard clarke's testimony before the 9/11 commission...

check out the contrasts between schlozman and the other three... it's dramatic...

i'm not ordinarily prone to making snide personal attacks, but the tone, tenor, and pitch of schlozman's voice makes me want to grab him by the neck and choke the ever-loving daylights out of him... his reputation is one of being very high-handed, arrogant, dismissive, and verbally abusive (certainly a big asset for a loyal bushie), and, with a voice like that, it's a wonder someone hasn't arranged a back-ally encounter a long time ago...

Schlozman delivers for Karl, Dick and George

brings home the bacon and fries it up in a pan, cuz he's a bushie, b-u-s-h-i-e, i'll say it again, he's a bushie, b-u-s-h-i-e...

Bringing an indictment close to the election can intimidate minority voters, affect voter turnout and potentially even influence the result of the election.

But Bradley Schlozman -- the former U.S. Attorney for Kansas City and controversial deputy head at the Civil Rights Division -- broke with the policy. Not only that, but there's evidence that he rushed four indictments to land just before last November's election.

Indeed, timing aside, even Schlozman's decision to pursue the cases at all is questionable in light of established Justice Department practice. Although trumpeted as cases of voter fraud, the cases alleged only registration fraud, and there's no evidence that those registrations were intended to result in actual fraudulent votes. For that reason, other U.S. attorneys have passed on pursuing similar prosecutions. But Schlozman, who'd worked to push voter I.D. laws while in the Civil Rights Division, leapt at the opportunity.

sleazeman schlozman comes across as a real piece of work, an arrogant, verbally abusive asshole, who, no doubt for those very characteristics (in addition to being a very loyal bushie), makes him invaluable to karl, dick and george...

Schlozman: disdainful and vitriolic

"He was universally despised by career people. He was the most disdainful and vitriolic guy I've ever dealt with, and he had it in for everybody."

looks like there's no longer any doubt, the justice department was merely a branch office for the white house, which, in turn, was merely a wholly-owned subsidiary of karl rove inc. and the republican national committee...

Schlozman was appointed to be the interim U.S. attorney in western Missouri on March 23, 2006 -- just two weeks after the president had signed the USA Patriot Act into law; the bill contained a provision that allowed interim U.S. attorneys to serve indefinitely.

Schlozman, who had zero prosecutorial experience, was installed as the U.S. attorney in western Missouri -- where Jim Talent was battling Claire McCaskill in one of the closest Senate races in the country. The administration appointed him suddenly and without consulting the senior Republican senator in the state, Sen. Kit Bond (R-MO). A spokeswoman for Bond said that "Senator Bond was informed of Mr. Schlozman's appointment when he was named as interim U.S. attorney for the Western District of Missouri."

"most disdainful and vitriolic" is quite a statement... i've observed folks like that in action in the private sector and it isn't pretty... sure, you take a lot of shit from them that you should never have to take out of fear of losing your job, but, what it amounts to, without beating around the bush (pardon the pun, please), is nothing more or less than verbal and emotional abuse... what's usually worse is that THEIR bosses are often aware of such behavior and do nothing... needless to say, that kind of boss NEVER behaves that way in front of HIS boss, so HIS boss just writes it off to whining employees...
