Ashcroft, Rumsfeld and Tenet urged the 9/11 Commission to limit its investigation

i'm so tired of all these little bits and pieces when at this point in time we can be reasonably sure we still don't know the whole story...

anyway, here's another little piece...

Senior Bush administration officials sternly cautioned the 9/11 Commission against probing too deeply into the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, according to a document recently obtained by the ACLU.

The notification came in a letter dated January 6, 2004, addressed by Attorney General John Ashcroft, Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld and CIA Director George J. Tenet [ACLU PDF document, page 26]. The ACLU described it as a fax sent by David Addington, then-counsel to former vice president Dick Cheney.

In the message, the officials denied the bipartisan commission's request to question terrorist detainees, informing its two senior-most members that doing so would "cross" a "line" and obstruct the administration's ability to protect the nation.

here's the letter... see for yourself how those three bozos tied the hands of those seeking the truth...

fer god's sake... can't we just get to the truth and get past all of this dribble-drabble crap...

The lengths we go to avoid looking like a conspiracy theorist

i have a lot of respect for marcy "emptywheel" wheeler who blogs regularly and in great depth on national intelligence and security issues, torture accountability, the ever-waffling justice department, detainee policy and other such critically important issues over at firedoglake... she researches her material assiduously and rarely leaves a stone unturned... in fact, she often provides more material and in greater depth than i have the time or patience to absorb...

i'm also aware of the extraordinary lengths otherwise intelligent people who fall into the category of reasonable, progressive liberals will go to in order to avoid being labeled "conspiracy theorists," even when the "conspiracy theory" in question is smacking them upside the head...

yesterday, marcy put up a post under this title...

FAA and NORAD Changed Records to Accord with Cheney Lies

the post was based on an nyt review of a recently-published book by john farmer called “the ground truth,” in which farmer, a senior counsel to the 9/11 commission and the dean of the law school at rutgers, on the basis of actual records, attests that the:
F.A.A. and Norad records [show] that a day after a Sept. 17 White House briefing, both agencies suddenly altered their chronologies to produce a coherent timeline and story that “fit together nicely with the account provided publicly by Deputy Defense Secretary Wolfowitz and Vice President Cheney.”

here's marcy's conclusion...
We’ve know for a long time that the FAA records, in particular, were politicized. Given already documented proof that Cheney lied to hide the fact that he violated the chain of command on 9/11 it’s not surprising that that politicization served Dick Cheney’s false narrative of leadership.

But we can add this book to the long list of proof that Cheney’s a big liar trying to hide his own incompetence.

jumpin' jeebus key f'ing ryst on a trapeze, marcy...! somebody turns up irrefutable evidence of dick cheney falsifying records and you conclude he has to be covering-up INCOMPETENCE...? i ask you, m'dear, when exactly did the arch-fiend, dick cheney, EVER display any evidence of incompetence and when exactly did you become convinced that the man doesn't know exactly and precisely what he is doing at any given moment...?

every single one of us has by now heard and read multiple stories speculating, attempting to prove, and/or setting out pretty solid circumstantial - if not smoking-gun - evidence that there was a conspiracy on almost all counts to present 9/11 as something other than it was... you, marcy, of all people, ought to be able to take all of that critical context and come up with at least a reasoned alternative supposition that cheney might have been acting out a motive other than attempting to cover the incompetence of his own sorry ass... don't you think there's a possibility, however remote, he might be covering up for SOMETHING ELSE...? huh...?

i'm disappointed in you... seriously disappointed...

Saudi Arabia and 9/11

the philadelphia daily news is doing a super job of investigative jounalism with an epic story on the suit pending before the u.s. court of appeals for the second circuit...

this is from the first of two parts...

Cozen O'Connor law firm has filed an 812-page lawsuit on behalf of U.S. and global insurance companies alleging that Saudi Arabia and Saudi-backed Islamist charities nurtured and financed al-Qaeda, the author of those deadly attacks.

[...]

Round 1 in this titanic legal battle went to the Saudis and their high-powered lawyers three years ago when a U.S. District Court judge removed the government and Saudi royals as defendants.

[...]

But Cozen argued that the kingdom and its officials should be restored as defendants. A fiercely competitive lawyer who built a tiny practice into one of the world's leading law firms for insurers, Cozen, 67, contended that the defendants "knew and intended to support al-Qaeda through these charities."

With a ruling from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit imminent, Cozen and his partners have unearthed facts and made connections missed not only by the 9/11 Commission but also by Congress in its investigations.

[...]

Cozen is suing under the 1976 Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act, which protects foreign governments from being sued by U.S. citizens except in rare circumstances. While the standard is extremely high, federal courts have permitted lawsuits in cases where foreign countries engaged in criminal conduct, such as murder.

Even if Cozen loses the appeal and the Saudis retain immunity, U.S. District Judge Richard Conway Casey ruled that there is enough evidence to proceed against several Islamist charities, banks, and alleged terrorism financiers named in the lawsuit.

While Cozen was the first, a half-dozen other groups have sued the Saudis to hold them liable for supporting Islamist charities allegedly tied to al-Qaeda.

Among the other plaintiffs: the estate of an FBI agent killed in the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center, and the investment firm Cantor Fitzgerald, which lost 657 employees when American Airlines Flight 11 slammed into the north tower.

even though part 1 was published on saturday, the website says part 2 will be posted "tomorrow," and the website is carrying news datelined monday, i am having no success finding part 2... stay tuned...

Ruh-roh... More holes in the official 9/11 story...

the official line is unraveling faster than a twelve-dollar, wal-mart, polyester sweater...

larisa alexandrovna and raw story have the scoop and a lot more...

Newly-released records obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request contradict the 9/11 Commission’s report on the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks and raise fresh questions about the role of Saudi government officials in connection to the hijackers.

The nearly 300 pages of a Federal Bureau of Investigation timeline used by the 9/11 Commission as the basis for many of its findings were acquired through a FOIA request filed by Kevin Fenton, a 26 year old translator from the Czech Republic. The FBI released the 298-page “hijacker timeline” Feb. 4.

The FBI timeline reveals that alleged hijacker Hamza Al-Ghamdi, who was aboard the United Airlines flight which crashed into the South Tower of the World Trade Center, had booked a future flight to San Francisco. He also had a ticket for a trip from Casablanca to Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia.

Though referenced repeatedly in the footnotes of the final 9/11 Commission report, the timeline has not previously been made available to the public.

The FBI timeline is dated Nov. 14, 2003 but appears to have been put together earlier (since the last date mentioned in the document is Oct. 22, 2001) and was provided to the 9/11 Commission during its 2003 investigation. The final Commission report cites the FBI timeline 52 times.

The FBI timeline reveals that Al-Ghamdi, the alleged United hijacker, was booked onto several flights scheduled for after the 9/11 attacks, a piece of information not documented in the Commission’s final report. According to the FBI timeline, Al-Ghamdi was booked on another United Airlines flight on the very day of the attack.

and ya gotta LOVE this line...
“There are enough discrepancies and unanswered questions in the 9/11 Commission report that under a friendly administration, the 9/11 investigation should be re-opened,” Baer wrote in an email message Tuesday night [Robert Baer, a former CIA case officer in the Middle East whose See No Evil: The True Story of a Ground Soldier in the CIA's War on Terrorism became the inspiration for the award winning film Syriana].

we need the truth and i'm sick and goddam tired of waiting for it...

The 9/11 Commission: stonewall-ER AND stonewall-EE

my snarky comment the other day about the 9/11 commission heads complaining about being stonewalled by the cia when the commission itself, in fact, stonewalled the hell out of the american people, gets the same reaction in a much fuller context from luke in another post about sibel edmonds...
After the 9/11 Commission Report was published, former FBI translator Sibel Edmonds wrote a number of articles which demonstrate that even when the Commission was informed about serious matters related to 9/11, the Commission ignored them. These omissions meant that the public never became aware of the full story of 9/11, and importantly, that the Commission's recommendations were flawed.

I'd call that obstruction.

there's a great deal more... by all means, go read it all...

The charade continues: 9/11 Commission heads outraged at CIA videotape stonewall

well, ain't this interestin'... the 9/11 commission stonewalled the american public and now the commission's two heads are outraged and dumbfounded that the cia stonewalled THEM... all i've got to say, mr. hamilton and mr. kean, is how about going back and going through the whole ugly affair again, and maybe THIS TIME we could all find out what REALLY happened...? huh...? huh...? whaddaya say...?
Stonewalled by the C.I.A.

By THOMAS H. KEAN and LEE H. HAMILTON
Published: January 2, 2008

MORE than five years ago, Congress and President Bush created the 9/11 commission. The goal was to provide the American people with the fullest possible account of the “facts and circumstances relating to the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001” — and to offer recommendations to prevent future attacks. Soon after its creation, the president’s chief of staff directed all executive branch agencies to cooperate with the commission.

The commission’s mandate was sweeping and it explicitly included the intelligence agencies. But the recent revelations that the C.I.A. destroyed videotaped interrogations of Qaeda operatives leads us to conclude that the agency failed to respond to our lawful requests for information about the 9/11 plot. Those who knew about those videotapes — and did not tell us about them — obstructed our investigation.

There could have been absolutely no doubt in the mind of anyone at the C.I.A. — or the White House — of the commission’s interest in any and all information related to Qaeda detainees involved in the 9/11 plot. Yet no one in the administration ever told the commission of the existence of videotapes of detainee interrogations.

[...]

[G]overnment officials decided not to inform a lawfully constituted body, created by Congress and the president, to investigate one the greatest tragedies to confront this country. We call that obstruction.

Thomas H. Kean and Lee H. Hamilton served as chairman and vice chairman, respectively, of the 9/11 commission.

seems like there's a lotta this obstructin' business goin' 'round... just as a for instance, gentlemen, i'd be curious as to why the twin towers debris was shipped out of the country immediately following the clean-up* instead of being retained as forensic evidence... maybe you could push the CIA to release their 9/11 report...** oh, but hey... don't get me wrong... i understand your little charade... huff and puff and write nyt op-eds about how the integrity of your commission's work has been compromised so everybody will think that everything you did the FIRST time around was, to the best of your abilities, blemish-free... just remember... us peasants aren't quite as dumb as advertised...
* A shipment of scrap steel from New York's collapsed World Trade Center will arrive in Shanghai tomorrow [25 January 2002], according to media reports. The steel was bought by Shanghai Baosteel Group Corp. and several other domestic mills, which are always eager to buy scrap metal.

Baosteel Group, the nation's largest steel firm, has purchased 50,000 tons of the scrap steel from "Ground Zero," the ruins of the September 11 terrorist attack, at no more than US$120 each ton, according to yesterday's Beijing Youth Daily.

msnbc story from may 2007...
** A bipartisan group of senators is pushing legislation that would force the CIA to release an inspector general’s report on the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

The CIA has spent more than 20 months weighing requests under the Freedom of Information Act for its internal investigation of the attacks but has yet to release any portion of it.

The agency is the only federal office involved in counterterrorism operations that has not made at least a version of its internal 9/11 investigation public.

Worried about possible criminal charges? Destroy the evidence! [UPDATE: Hayden assures us the interrogation techniques were "legal"]

< duh > it's a no-brainer...
The Central Intelligence Agency in 2005 destroyed at least two videotapes documenting the interrogation of two Al Qaeda operatives in the agency’s custody, a step it took in the midst of Congressional and legal scrutiny about the C.I.A’s secret detention program, according to current and former government officials.

The videotapes showed agency operatives in 2002 subjecting terror suspects — including Abu Zubaydah, the first detainee in C.I.A. custody — to severe interrogation techniques. They were destroyed in part because officers were concerned that tapes documenting controversial interrogation methods could expose agency officials to greater risk of legal jeopardy, several officials said.

The C.I.A. said today that the decision to destroy the tapes had been made “within the C.I.A. itself,” and they were destroyed to protect the safety of undercover officers and because they no longer had intelligence value. The agency was headed at the time by Porter J. Goss. Through a spokeswoman, Mr. Goss declined this afternoon to comment on the destruction of the tapes.

[...]

It was not clear who within the C.I.A. authorized the destruction of the tapes, but current and former government officials said it had been approved at the highest levels of the agency.

george...!?!? hey, GEORGE...!?!? TENET...!?!? yeah, YOU...! C'MERE...!! yeah, ok... you too, dubya... ok, guys... siddown... let's have us a li'l chat, k...? huh...? yeah, ok, porter... you can come along too...

[UPDATE]

c'mon, mike... reassure us that there's REALLY no reason whatsoever to be concerned... tell us again that our government has things well in hand and would NEVER, EVER cross a line, ANY line...
CIA Director Michael Hayden said House and Senate intelligence committee leaders were informed of the existence of the tapes and the CIA's intention to destroy them. He also said the CIA's internal watchdog watched the tapes in 2003 and verified that the interrogation practices were legal.

He said the CIA began taping the interrogations as an internal check on the program after President Bush authorized the use of harsh questioning methods. The methods included waterboarding, which simulates drowning, government officials said.

"The Agency was determined that it proceed in accord with established legal and policy guidelines. So, on its own, CIA began to videotape interrogations," Hayden said in a written message to CIA employees, obtained by The Associated Press.

The CIA also decided to destroy the tapes in "the absence of any legal or internal reason to keep them," Hayden wrote. He said the tapes were destroyed only after it was determined "they were no longer of intelligence value and not relevant to any internal, legislative or judicial inquiries."

whatever...

A verifiable, fact-checked timeline of potential government conspiracy

courtesy of WantToKnow...
1996-2001: Federal authorities are aware for years before 9/11 that suspected terrorists with ties to Osama bin Laden are receiving flight training at schools in the US and abroad. One convicted terrorist confesses that his planned role in a terror attack was to crash a plane into CIA headquarters. [Washington Post, 9/23/01, CBS, 5/30/02, more]

1996-2001: On multiple occasions spies give detailed reports on bin Laden's location. Each time, the CIA director or top White House officials prevent bin Laden's elimination. [Los Angeles Times, 12/5/04, New York Times, 12/30/01, more]

2000-2001: 15 of the 19 hijackers fail to fill in visa documents properly in Saudi Arabia. Only six are interviewed. All 15 should have been denied entry to the US. [Washington Post, 10/22/02, ABC, 10/23/02] Two top Republican senators say if State Department personnel had merely followed the law, 9/11 would not have happened. [AP, 12/18/02, more]

2000-2001: The military conducts exercises simulating hijacked airliners used as weapons to crash into targets causing mass casualties. One target is the World Trade Center (WTC), another the Pentagon. Yet after 9/11, over and over the White House and security officials say they're shocked that terrorists hijacked airliners and crashed them into landmark buildings. [USA Today, 4/19/04, Military District of Washington, 11/3/00, New York Times, 10/3/01, more]

Jan 2001: After the Nov 2000 elections, US intelligence agencies are told to "back off" investigating the bin Ladens and Saudi royals. There have always been constraints on investigating Saudi Arabians. [BBC, 11/6/01, more]

Spring 2001: A series of military and governmental policy documents is released that seek to legitimize the use of US military force in the pursuit of oil and gas. One advocates presidential subterfuge and hiding the reasons for warfare "as a necessity for mobilizing public support." [Sydney Morning Herald, 12/26/02, more]

May 2001: For the third time, US security chiefs reject Sudan's offer of thick files on bin Laden and al-Qaeda. A senior CIA source calls it "the worst single intelligence failure in the business." [Guardian, 9/30/01, more]

June-Aug 2001: German intelligence warns the CIA that Middle Eastern terrorists are training for hijackings and targeting American interests. Russian President Vladimir Putin alerts the US of suicide pilots training for attacks on US targets. Aug 6, 2001: President Bush receives an intelligence briefing warning that bin Laden might be planning to hijack commercial airliners. Titled "Bin Ladin Determined To Strike in US," the briefing specifically mentions the WTC. Yet Bush later claims it "said nothing about an attack on America." [Washington Post, 4/12/04, Briefing, 8/6/01, more]

Sept 11, 2001: Six air traffic controllers who dealt with two of the hijacked airliners make a tape recording describing the events within hours of the attacks. The tape is never turned over to the FBI. It is later illegally destroyed by a supervisor without anyone making a transcript or even listening to it. [Washington Post, 5/6/04, New York Times, 5/6/04]

Sept 13-19, 2001: Bin Laden's family is taken under FBI supervision to a secret assembly point. They leave the country by private plane when airports reopen days after the attacks. [New York Times, 9/30/01, Boston Globe, 9/20/01, more]

The Commission spokesperson initially states members were not informed of this, but later acknowledges they were. [New York Times, 8/11/05, more]

2004 - 2005: A growing number of top government officials and public leaders express disbelief in the official story of 9/11. 100 prominent leaders and 40 9/11 family members sign a statement calling for an unbiased inquiry into evidence suggesting high-level government officials may have deliberately allowed the attacks to occur. [Various Publications]

Aug 9, 2006: A book by 9/11 Commission chairmen Kean and Hamilton outlines repeated deceptions by the Pentagon and FAA, including the timelines of Flights 77 and 93. CNN News: "The fact that the government would...perpetuate the lie suggests that we need a full investigation of what is going on." [CNN, 8/9/06 , MSNBC/AP, 8/4/06, more]

this site is a new one for me, but i like it so far, primarily because it includes verifiable links to everything it posts... if we're after truth, it only makes sense to be as factual as possible, which, admittedly, in these days of spin, disinformation, propaganda and media brainwashing, is no small task...

It's been Cheney all this time

here's how it looks to me... darth handled the internal, government stuff and rove handled the external, public stuff... what a team...!

think progress posts on an interview this morning with barton gellman on washington post radio... gellman is the co-author of the wapo's four-part cheney series...

GELLMAN: It’s been often speculated that 9/11 exerted a profound psychological change on the Vice President. But we did not find evidence that that’s true.

There’s a moment in the story in which we’ve got witnesses who are watching him watch the World Trade Center collapse. Everyone else in the room is groaning. And he doesn’t blink his eyes. He turns around and starts working the phones again.

And what he’s doing is he’s finding that 9/11 confirms some long-held beliefs of his. And it gives him the opportunity to press through some long-desired changes. He has not changed his views very much over the years. What has changed is he has a greater opportunity to put them into action.

it was the moment he was waiting for all his life... everything he'd done, all the philosophy of government he'd developed, all the actions he wanted to put into play, everything was just waiting for that day... you'd almost think it was simply TOO fortuitous, wouldn't you...? < adjusts tin foil hat > well, WOULDN'T you..??

from a comment on the think progress post...

Cheney did it.

What does Occam’s Razor tell you about the ODDS that NORAD would be running a series of drills on the morning of 9/11 designed specifically to simulate an attack against America involving hijacked planes flown into buildings?

What does Occam’s Razor tell you about FEMA having been prepositioned in New York for the drill - which commenced at the same moment the first tower was struck?

What does Occam’s Razor tell you about the warning sent to Israeli Nationals two hours before the first plane struck?

Ignoring everything you have seen and heard to brainwash you to the contrary in its aftermath, what are the odds that a man in a cave could beat all of the defenses of the United States of America by coincidentally timing his attack to coincide with a total shut down of NORAD?

Occam’s razor states that the explanation of any phenomenon should make as few assumptions as possible, eliminating, or “shaving off”, those that make no difference in the observable predictions of the explanatory hypothesis or theory.

Pieces of aircraft were scattered over a five mile area in Pennsylvania.

WTC 7 - though untouched by an aircraft, fell directly into its own footprint less than two hours after its owner ordered the fire department to pull back from the structure in order to “pull it.”

5 Israeli Mossad Agents with explosives expertise were arrested for filming the destruction of the twin towers. Their film has never been made public. They failed seven polygraph tests. They were quietly deported to Israel.

Norm Mineta testified before the 9/11 Commission that he personally witnessed Cheney commanding one of his subordinates in the bunker on the morning of 9/11 to allow the approaching aircraft to strike the Pentagon uncontested.

The manuevers made by the planes that struck both the Pentagon and the second WTC tower could not possibly have been made by any first time pilot - according to aviation experts.

O C C A M ‘ S

R A Z O R

I N D E E D ! ! !

Where are the NSA Spy Satellite photos of the “757″ striking the Pentagon?

Where is the video that was shot by the Dancing Israelis arrested on 9/11?

Where is the flight manifest including Arab names on any of the flights on 9/11?

Two planes hit two buildings in New York, yet three buildings fell down straight into their own footprint.

A man said by his flight instructor not to be able to fly at all performed a perfect 270 degree corkscrew descent over the heavily fortified Pentagon as Cheney ordered the stand down of air defenses (per Norm Mineta) - and struck the target with military precision (according to the FAA controllers watching it all on their radar screens).

Where are the radar videos of that flight?

Where are the videos of that 757?

Where are the satellite images of that plane?

i've thought so many times, when the latest news delivers still more shockers about the criminals occupying the white house that maybe, at last, the walls will begin crumbling down... it would certainly seem - to me, at least - that they should have crumbled into dust long ago... maybe THIS time...?

do you suppose that barton gellman and jo becker may just turn out to be the woodward-bernstein superheroes of our age...?

Very cool...! Ron Paul prepares a reading list for Rudy

it's one thing to say something, be attacked for it, and then refute the attack... it's another thing entirely to refute the attack AND provide a solid, irrefutable stack of reading material to back up your original statement...
Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul on Thursday gave front-runner Rudy Giuliani a list of foreign-policy books to back up his contention that attacks by Islamic militants are fueled by the U.S. presence in the Middle East," Andy Sullivan reports for Reuters. "I'm giving Mr. Giuliani a reading assignment," the nine-term Texas congressman said as he stood behind a stack of books that included the report by the commission that examined the attacks on the United States on Sept. 11, 2001.

[...]

The "Reading for Rudy" list includes Chalmers Johnson's Blowback, Robert A. Pape's Dying to Win, and Michael Scheuer's Imperial Hubris, along with the 9-11 Commission Report.

paul also prepared brief excerpts from each as a kind of "executive summary", or, as paul termed it, "cliff's notes", in case rudy found himself short of time...

if i was in rudy's shoes, i would be thoroughly humiliated, but i would imagine his ego probably prevents him from even recognizing the depth of the insult... maybe paul could provide some humility guidelines to go along with the books and the cliff's notes...

CIA Inspector General Report on 9/11

this should have been done a long time ago... this kind of stonewalling only adds to the conspiracy theories that are already swirling around and are fueled by stories of what was left out of the 9/11 commission report... what's so goddam secret that it can't be shared with the american people, unless there's something to hide...?
A bipartisan group of senators is pushing legislation that would force the CIA to release an inspector general's report on the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

The CIA has spent more than 20 months weighing requests under the Freedom of Information Act for its internal investigation of the attacks but has yet to release any portion of it.

The agency is the only federal office involved in counterterrorism operations that has not made at least a version of its internal 9/11 investigation public.

Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., and two other intelligence committee leaders - chairman Jay Rockefeller, D-W.Va., and senior Republican Kit Bond of Missouri - are pushing legislation that would require the agency to declassify the executive summary of the review within one month and submit a report to Congress explaining why any material was withheld.

The provision has been approved by the Senate twice, but never made into law.

and, of course, news of this comes from the guardian across the pond rather than from our own media... how perfectly typical...

Clear and detailed foreknowledge of 9/11

lukery at wot is it good 4 has steadily gained in investigative ability and is dogging the sibel edmonds story magnificently... in a post today, he reviews sibel's testimony before the 9/11 commission, information we already know, but that always seems to slip off of our collective radar screens...

sibel edmonds
...

(We) received information that: 1) Osama bin Laden was planning a major terrorist attack in the United States targeting four or five major cities; 2) the attack was going to involve airplanes; 3) some of the individuals in charge of carrying out this attack were already in place in the United States; 4) the attack was going to be carried out soon, in a few months.

thanks to lukery for keeping this visible... we can only hope and pray that the truth will out eventually, and, if we keep banging the drum, maybe it will out sooner rather than later...

Why does Alternet feel such a big need to shut down 9/11 discussion?

personally, i don't get it... it seems to me that there are way too many questions still surrounding 9/11, so why are there some people so heavily invested in discounting some questions but not others...? i think it's a shame to find a supposedly liberal, progressive, dedicated-to-free speech outlet like alternet stooping to questioning someone's right to ask intelligent questions and to demand comprehensive, truthful answers... however, i have noticed it's been a pattern with alternet, both with joshua holland in this article as well as with matt taibbi's screeds (here and here)...
[H]er comments on that day's show represented the worst of the left's conspiratorial tendencies; Rosie ran with the great intellectual fallacy that supports the 9/11 "Truth" movement: Anything not adequately explained by the official investigations into 9/11 are de facto evidence of an inside job...

that was bad enough, but then he has the nerve to define the debate for us...
What might have led to a challenging debate about the close ties between the Bush administration and terrorist financiers, or about the United States' unshakable relationship with the Saudi Royal family or the nature of our energy policy or the toll of American militarism emerged instead as an easily-refuted argument based, at the end of the day, on a talk-show host's knowledge about the melting point of steel.

don't define my debate for me, please... until i see a comprehensive, analytical, forensic report onthe twin towers, WTC-7 and the pentagon, i am going to continue to have some serious questions... what totally astounds me is why we haven't seen one...

Rosie and 9/11

i've stayed away from this one, but i think the attacks on rosie o'donnell are crossing the line to a prohibition of free speech... i think she's entirely justified in raising questions... while it's certainly a volatile subject, why shouldn't she...? just because the media treats the subject like it's a dead skunk under the porch, it's not... there are lots of folks, including me, who simply do not feel like we have had all the facts presented to us... there's been entirely too much stonewalling... and rosie makes her case very well...
9/11 affected me deeply, as I know it did many Americans. The falling of the twin towers served to remind me that many of the assumptions Americans have about their lives are rooted in false feelings of security. In light of this reminder, I have begun doing exactly what this country, at its best, allows for me to do: inquire. Investigate. America is great in so many ways, one of which is the freedom to speak, and indeed think, freely. I have, of late, begun exercising the rights bestowed upon me by the democratic system I value, and the exercising of these rights has taken the form of an inquiry into what happened five years ago, an inquiry that resists the dominant explanations and that dares to entertain ideas that push me to the edge of what is bearable. I have come to no conclusions and, given the scope of the subject, will not for some time.

If the very act of asking is so destabilizing for people, than I have to wonder whether the fabric of our democracy is indeed so raveled it is beyond salvage. My own belief is that the act of asking is itself reparative, because it brings to life the values on which our constitution rests. I am, therefore, pledging my allegiance, hand over heart, trying, as always, for a rigorous truth.

she's right...

(thanks to raw story...)

Oh, by all means, let's not UPSET Joe Lieberman

to think that the people of connecticut elected this guy, and now he's blackmailing not only his former party, but also the entire goddam country... if there is a definition of a treasonous bastard, it would have to be joe lieberman...
Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Chairman Lieberman is making it clear he does not want Iraq-related amendments attached to a bill scheduled for floor action this week that would implement unfulfilled recommendations of the 9/11 Commission. Democratic leaders seemed inclined today to hold off introducing Iraq-related amendments to the bill, possibly to avoid upsetting Lieberman and moving him closer to switching party affiliations, which would swing the Senate back to GOP control.

[...]

In a Wall Street Journal op-ed today, Lieberman expressed his desire not to have a debate over Iraq, saying “let us declare a truce in the Washington political war over Iraq until” the “end of summer.”

As Glenn Greenwald notes, Lieberman wrote “almost exactly the same op-ed, on the same Wall St. Journal page, more than a year ago,” in effect arguing “that it is therefore our duty as Americans (still) to keep our mouths shut and be led to Victory.”

he is a miserable, rotten, son-of-a-bitch, and, trust me, i'm being quite restrained... a truce on the iraq debate until the end of summer...? joe lieberman is a poisonous toad masquerading as a human being...

(thanks to think progress...)
