WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama entered the final phase of an increasingly nasty U.S. presidential fight on Wednesday, with Clinton saying her decisive Pennsylvania win proved she was the best candidate to lead the Democrats back to the White House.

Clinton's victory boosted her depleted bank account and gave new hope to her struggling campaign, but the New York senator still faced a nearly impossible task trying to overcome Obama's lead in pledged delegates who will help pick the Democratic presidential nominee at the party's convention in August.

Clinton said Obama's failure to knock her out of the race, despite outspending her in Pennsylvania more than 2-to-1, cast doubt on his ability to capture the big states Democrats need in November's election race against Republican John McCain.

"I've won the states we have to win -- Ohio, now Pennsylvania," Clinton told CNN. "If you look at the broad base of support that I have accumulated, it really is the foundation on which we build our victory come the fall."

Well, I figured Hillary would win PA but I ain't happy about it [UPDATE]

i'm watching al jazeera who, through its u.s. partner, nbc, is reporting hrc 53% and obama 47%... the wapo is reporting 55-45 with 42% of the precincts reporting... the percentages may vary slightly but that looks like the final neighborhood... i don't think this gives hrc any more viability than she had going in... unfortunately, the win will undoubtedly give her the ammunition to stay in the race, and that's NOT a good thing...

The tens of thousands of young voters who have flocked to the Democrats in recent months were not attracted by the magic of Hillary Clinton. The great mass of defecting Republicans, many of them women, who in their hunger for leadership changed their registrations, did not come for her either.

They came for Barack Obama, a history-making African-American man of all the people. Those who fear him -- not just Republicans but, sadly, other Democrats -- have been furiously trying to come up with a plausible narrative to diminish him. With Lilliputian zeal, they try rope after little rope to tie down the unexpected giant in their midst. This pathetic impulse feeds on the internecine war of the interminable primaries.

Tuesday can put a stop to it. If Mrs. Clinton loses, she loses the last justification for keeping her candidacy alive.

With Mrs. Clinton and Mr. Obama differing little on the issues, Democrats can dare to be different and vote for the truly fresh force in this race, the one who has sparked an excitement and energy not seen since the Kennedy years. The bold choice is Barack Obama, who is uniquely placed to bridge America's most bitter divisions. History now calls on Pennsylvania to lead this nation into the future -- and all it requires is the courage to believe.

i'm here to tell ya, the "courage to believe" is a lot bigger deal than it sounds...

i'm sure obama and his team, along with every other non-comatose, halfway intelligent person in the entire country, could have anticipated that hillary would adopt a relentlessly offensive posture with obama last night... having watched and listened to hrc over the past couple of months, there was no way in hell it would have played out any differently... but, rather than see it for what it is, our stalwart nyt news reporters present it like hillary is strong and obama is weak, rather than portraying hrc as the desperate, obnoxious, annoying, playground bully she really is...

PHILADELPHIA - Senator Barack Obama found himself consistently on the defensive as he and Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton met Wednesday night in a tense debate that left him parrying questions and criticism on issues including values, patriotism and his association with onetime radicals from the 1960s.

It was the first time the two candidates had shared a debate stage in seven weeks, and it came six days before a primary in Pennsylvania that could determine whether Mrs. Clinton can continue her quest for the Democratic presidential nomination. It could also prove to be the last debate between them.

Accordingly, Mrs. Clinton did not let an opportunity pass as she repeatedly challenged Mr. Obama on his record and views — assisted, as it turned out, by vigorous questioning by the two moderators from ABC News, Charles Gibson and George Stephanopolous.

The result was arguably one of Mr. Obama’s weakest debate performances. He at times appeared annoyed as he sought to answer questions about his former pastor, his reluctance to wear an American flag pin on his lapel and his association in Chicago with former members of the Weather Underground, a radical group that carried out bombings in the 1960s that were intended to incite the overthrow of the government.

it's become patently clear... our corporate, political, governmental, and media elites are scared shitless of obama, and they will do anything and everything to bring him down... besides exposing hillary for the she-weasel she really is, we should be doing everything in our power to discredit those who claim to be giving us objective information, "information" that is nothing but pure establishment propaganda disguised as news... they can all go straight to hell... i ain't buyin' a goddam word of it any more...

People with Down Syndrome are the most insightful and honest people you will ever meet

i have observed down syndrome folks for many years and, although i have never had the pleasure of becoming acquainted with a person with down's, i have always been impressed with their incredible ability to size people up on a feeling level, to be unfailingly and directly honest, and to be cheerful and loving even in the most adverse of circumstances...

the young man in this youtube clip, dan drinker, is, in his own terms, a "downsy," and, if his endorsement of obama carries any weight at all, as it absolutely should, we will all be casting our vote for senator obama in november...



dan's younger brother made this video and has this to say about it...

My older brother has always been an excellent judge of character.

There is no one hiding behind Dan's chair, that is just the top of my head in his mirror as I film him. This interview is something Dan has asking me to shoot for a few days now. These are solely his opinions, I edited it for time purposes but I did not tell him what to say. He has a lot to say, just difficulty expressing it. He insisted I subtitle his words saying, "I want to be understood" and who among us doesn't want to be understood?
