The US is like a drunkard who charges to war with anyone who might pose a threat, ex-Senator and former US presidential candidate Mike Gravel says.

“I like the US. But at the same time I think my country is an imperial country that is going downhill, and our leadership does not even acknowledge the problem,” confesses Gravel.

somewhere along the line, this guy had an epiphany... i'd be really interested in hearing him talk about that...

US elections are rigged long before the voting results are falsified.

The news media helps the process along by making (or trying to make) legitimate candidates disappear.

In the 2008 campaign for president, the candidate the news media is trying to trivialize and marginalize Ron Paul. [profmarcus: also Dennis Kucinich and Mike Gravel, both of whom are also being subjected to outright ridicule]

In 1992, the "disappeared" candidate was Democrat Larry Agran.

The good news is that the Internet has made this kind of chicanery, much more difficult.

I think I mentioned earlier that I'm likin' Mike Gravel more and more

yep, i did... every time i read something about him, my opinion of him goes up...

"If [Mitt Romney's] the nominee, I'd eat his lunch," Gravel said in an interview with the Worcester (Ind.) Telegram & Gazette, referring to the former Massachusetts governor.

Gravel, whose support hovers between 0 and 1 percent in polls of Democratic voters, created waves with his bombastic performance in the first debate among the Democratic candidates. He is advocating a series of unorthodox policies including establishing a national ballot initiative that would have Americans voting on most of the country's laws and a replacement of the current tax code with a universal sales tax.

The sales tax, which Gravel insists would not be regressive, would provide for cost-of-living assistance to cover food, shelter and transportation for the poor.

"Now, the poor person is either on welfare or sleeping under the bridge,” Mr. Gravel told the newspaper. “This would provide a cash flow to the poor.”

Much of Gravel's support comes from anti-war activists excited about his calls for an immediate withdraw of all US troops from Iraq. He said US trouble in Iraq is "identical" to the situation the country found itself in during the Vietnam war.

i can hardly believe i'm saying this, cuz when it first occurred to me, i thought it was one of the more flaky things i'd come up with, but the idea of a gravel/paul ticket is sounding better and better every day... besides, i would LOVE to see him eat mitt romney's lunch...

I'm likin' Mike Gravel more and more

honestly, i was kidding when i said the other day that my dream ticket for 2008 was gravel/paul... any more, i'm not so sure i wasn't on to something... the story calls him a "long shot..." maybe not so much...

Gravel went on to reaffirm his support for his signature campaign issue, a national initiative process, as well his support for a national sales tax, a traditionally conservative position.

When asked whether he believed marijuana should be available next to beer in liquor stores, Gravel replied, "Go get yourself a fifth of scotch or a fifth of gin and chug-a-lug it down and you'll find you lose your senses a lot faster than you would smoking some marijuana."

He asserted that all drugs should legalized and regulated. "The drug problem is a public health problem. It's not a criminal problem. We make it a criminal problem because we treat people like criminals."

Gravel continued, "You take a drug addict, you throw him in jail, you leave him there, and he learns the criminal trade so that when he gets out you have recidivism."

When pressed on his earlier statement that President Bush should be jailed for his manipulation of pre-war information, Gravel reaffirmed that belief.

"If you had an FBI agent knock at your door today and you lie to that agent, you commit a felony and you go to jail," Gravel said.

"If that's the way it is for ordinary citizens, what about the president of the United States who lies to the American people, fraudulently sells them on a war that 50 million Americans don't want and over 3,000 Americans get killed as a result of that, and thousands and thousands of Iraqis gets killed... do you not think that's a felony? It's criminal."

it's amazing... when somebody actually talks some sense, you don't have to sit down and analyze your ass off to figure out what they are REALLY saying, it's just obvious...

Damn straight...!

"If a couple of lesbians or gay men want to get married, and they love each other, they should have the right to do that and enjoy all the legalities in our society that go along with that. I have no problem with that at all."

"I think that people who create these problems of homophobia and the likes of that do us a disservice," Gravel continues. "We are all human beings and one of the things that should motivate us, most of all, is love."

He blasts President Bush's "faith-based leadership," saying, "You can't legislate morality."

ok, ok... it's a bad pun... so sue me...

p.s. the most refreshing honesty and the clearest statement of truth on the issue yet... gravel's stock keeps rising in my book...
