Out of Egypt, a work-around for the internet "kill" switch and Twitter

[A] group of hackers is close to delivering software that could turn laptops into low-cost Internet routers—and help protesters organize.

Hours after the government in Egypt shut down that country’s access to the Internet, hackers around the world started banding together to craft some kind of workaround. And one group claims to be only a day or two away from delivering a partial solution.

Their initiative is called the Open Mesh Project and it began when Shervin Pishevar, an Internet entrepreneur in Palo Alto, California, posted a message on Twitter calling for help shipping software into Egypt that could turn regular laptops into low-cost Internet routers, forming what’s known as a “mesh network,” where each computer can route messages along to the others.

Google launched an Internet-free workaround for Twitter users in Egypt, whose Internet and cell phone service has been disabled. ... Working with engineers from Twitter, Google developed a call-in system that allows users to dictate messages over a landline, which are then transcribed and posted.

We need an open internet - "That's Bullshit" with Sam Seder

i've lost track of the petitions and pleas and letters and faxes i've signed and sent begging that the internet be allowed to remain open and unconstrained by greedy corporations hell-bent on profits...

the combo of my laptop and rapid, readily available internet access literally makes my current life possible... every few months, i'm on the move, conducting my personal life and my business from different cities, different time zones, different countries and different continents... from the keyboard of my laptop, i shop, make travel arrangements, conduct business correspondence, make phone calls, hold business meetings, keep in touch with family and friends, do my banking, conduct research, post material for students in my classes, keep up with news and current events, and a thousand and one other things that are an essential part of my daily routine... the last thing i need is to have some money-crazed corporation telling me what i can access and what i can't or throwing pay-as-you-go speed bumps in the way of doing what i need to do...

Google, the world's biggest online search engine, wants to turbocharge your Internet connection.

The company said Wednesday it is getting into the broadband service business with trials for fiber networks that will deliver Internet access speeds that are 100 times faster than what most Americans are getting today.

The company said in a blog that it will build fiber-to-the-home connections to a small number of locations across the country that will deliver Internet access speeds of 1 gigabit per second. The company didn't say what areas would be part of its experiment, but said prices would be competitive and that its network would reach at least 50,000 and potentially up to 500,000 people. A source who spoke on the condition of anonymity said the company doesn't currently have plans to expand beyond the initial tests but will evaluate as the tests progress.

and, in typical wapo, head-in-the-sand, context-free fashion, completely neglects to mention that there are a full TWENTY-EIGHT COUNTRIES that have faster internet than the u.s... great going, wapo...!!

whenever i'm out of the u.s., this ad constantly appears on websites i visit... teh google obviously groks the fact that i'm connecting from a non-u.s. isp and responds accordingly...



the satellite internet service that we use at the project here in afghanistan shows me as logged in from an ip address in the uk... i bet if the ip address was afghanistan, i wouldn't be seeing this...!

The Video Google Censored

Google took this video down after three days and then when I attempted to post it to YouTube it was rejected.

This video is an important companion piece to the video that I call "Inside Job" (see the Brasscheck TV archive.)

"Inside Job" shows that thousands of eye witnesses and millions of live TV viewers heard and heard about MULTIPLE explosions in the Twin Towers that preceded their sudden and inexplicable collapse.

"The 9/11 Solution" shows that even as the World Trade Center was burning and immediately after the collapses, a stream of disinformation laying down the key official 9/11 myths was being actively being put in place via the US mass media (i.e. the impact of the planes weakened the structures, the "intense" fires caused the collapses, Bin Laden was the only possible suspect.)

i think it's particularly important to keep our eye on things that someone clearly doesn't WANT us to see...
