i posted last evening on the letter to gonzo written by his harvard law school classmates and mentioned the upcoming publication of the letter as a full-page advert in today's wapo... well, here ya go...



meanwhile, over at the national press club...

During an event this morning at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., Attorney General Alberto Gonzales launched an unabashed and shameless finger-pointing campaign at outgoing Deputy Attorney General Paul McNulty, blaming him for the U.S. attorney scandal.

Minimizing his own role, Gonzales said McNulty has “most of the operational authority and decisions” at the Department of Justice.

Despite having delegated the task of putting together the list of fired U.S. attorneys to his chief of staff Kyle Sampson, Gonzales claimed that “the one person I would care about would be the views of the Deputy Attorney General. … At end of the day, my understanding was that Mr. Sampson’s recommendations reflected the consensus view of the senior leadership of the Department — in particular the Deputy Attorney General.”

When asked why two inexperienced staffers — Sampson and Monica Goodling — were given prominent roles in the firing process, Gonzales responded, “Well again you have to remember at the end of the day, the recommendations reflected the views of the Deputy Attorney General. He signed off on the names and he would know better than anyone else.”

and mcnulty isn't even gone yet... couldn't he at least wait until his chair cools off...? is gonzo a total weenie or what...?

Dear Fellow Harvard Law School Alumnus

it's a major slap in the face when your law school classmates band together to write a letter telling you how ashamed of you they are...

Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales, who has been under fire from politicians in both parties, was assailed today by several dozen of his classmates at Harvard Law School, Class of 1982.

“As lawyers, and as a matter of principle, we can no longer be silent about this administration’s consistent disdain for the liberties we hold dear,” those classmates said in a letter to Mr. Gonzales today. “Your failure to stand for the rule of law, particularly when faced with a president who makes the aggrandized claim of being a unitary executive, takes this country down a dangerous path.”

The letter urged President Bush and Mr. Gonzales “to relent from this reckless path, and begin to restore respect for the rule of law we all learned to love many years ago.”

It was clear from the letter that his classmates’ unhappiness with Mr. Gonzales predated the controversy over the fired prosecutors. They accused him, for instance, of “sweeping aside the Geneva Conventions to justify torture” and generally trampling on civil liberties.

and it's going to be an even bigger slap in the face when this hits...

Mr. Gonzales’s Harvard classmate critics are to further express their dissatisfaction on Tuesday in a quarter-page advertisement in The Washington Post.

and, while they didn't expressly call for his resignation, one of the group represented his colleagues' thoughts this way...

[David M. Abromowitz, a Boston lawyer and one of the signers], said there was “a range of views” among the critics on whether the letter should call on Mr. Gonzales to step aside. As for why it did not, Mr. Abromowitz said, “If he left, it wouldn’t solve the problem.”

what an interesting comment... and, i agree... gonzo's resignation won't solve the problem... the problem(s) can be squarely located at 1600 pennsylvania avenue...

75 of the approximately 500 members of the class were contacted, and that more than 50 signed the letter.

ouch...

Harvard Law School greets alum Gonzo in fitting fashion

my opinion of harvard law school students has risen somewhat...

Student protesters wearing hoods and Guantanamo Bay garb found their way into the US Attorney General Alberto Gonzales' 25th Harvard Law School reunion Saturday.

"When I heard he was on campus, I was stuffing envelopes with letters to Congress in an office two floors above," said Deborah Popowski, a second-year law student, according to the release. "I dropped everything. Gonzales needs to know that after approving poorly-reasoned memos that distort the rule of law and justify torture, he is simply not welcome here."

According the the group, Popowski slipped though the law library's front doors and approached Gonzales from behind as the Attorney General's security detail kept protesters at bay.

"On behalf of many other Harvard Law students," she said, "I'd like to tell you that we are ashamed to have you as an alumnus of this school. And we're glad you're here to be able to tell you that."

Gonzales allegedly thanked the student and offered to shake her hand, but was refused.

is it any wonder the "loyal bushies" prefer to live in their bubbles...?
