U.S. bases in central Europe to host anti-missile defenses as well as U.S. troops

under the radar, the u.s. is conducting a defense build-up in central europe...
In a move that is raising hackles in Moscow, the US is proposing to install an anti-missile defence system in central Europe to counter any future attack from a nuclear-armed Iran.

[...]

The most likely base for the system is Poland, followed by the Czech Republic, officials said.

the "nuclear-armed iran" rationale is patently bogus... (see yesterday's post...)

also, i was in sofia a few weeks ago when the nato foreign ministers met and condi was there to sign this agreement with bulgaria...

Bulgaria has agreed to open three military bases to permanent use by 2,500 U.S. troops who would be available for combat in the Middle East and other nearby regions.

while we obsess with fitz, hastert, rove, bush, immigration and gore's new movie, the u.s. is inexorably expanding its military presence on russia's doorstep... after cheney's attack on russia in vilnius and the subsequent rumblings from russia about a renewed cold war, this is stuff that deserves more attention than it's getting...
