"You shouldn't mess with the people, because the people are tough."

so says "amlo" (Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador), the mexico city mayor who says he's stepping down from his post effective july 31 in order to concentrate on his campaign...

this is a very important story-in-progress for a whole host of reasons... i wrote a lengthy post the other day on some of the challenges mexico is facing and offered some reasons why vicente fox's performance in office has been so disappointing...

you can bet the bushies (and probably some of the old-line establishment democrats as well) aren't very happy at a leftist/socialist/populist, front-running presidential candidate grabbing headlines around the globe over a full year in advance of the mexican elections... it's going to be a very interesting campaign...

"I have decided to participate in the primary elections, to represent my party, should voters so decide, as candidate for the presidency," he said.

He pledged to embark on a whistle-stop tour across the country, visiting every electoral district by overland transport in a "low-cost campaign".

and let's not forget what happened to a previous popular, populist, mexican presidential candidate...
In the early evening of 23 March 1994, at a campaign rally in Lomas Taurinas, a poor neighborhood of Tijuana, [Luis Donaldo] Colosio was shot in the head from a distance of a few centimeters. He collapsed, and was subsequently rushed to the city's main hospital. His death was announced a few hours later.
