Why torture? Because we CAN...
i'm in complete agreement with paul krugman...
i've said until i'm blue in the face that the bush administration is all about power, money, control, and global hegemony... eviscerating the social contract, manipulating through fear, waging endless war, fostering terrorism, indulging in rampant cronyism, and controlling social behavior via religious extremism, appeals to latent bigotry, and domestic spying, are the tools of that agenda... calling these people incompetent misses the entire point... they are far from incompetent... they're accomplishing precisely what they've set out to accomplish, and we've gone right along with them...

So why is the Bush administration so determined to torture people?
To show that it can.
The central drive of the Bush administration — more fundamental than any particular policy — has been the effort to eliminate all limits on the president's power. Torture, I believe, appeals to the president and the vice president precisely because it's a violation of both law and tradition. By making an illegal and immoral practice a key element of U.S. policy, they're asserting their right to do whatever they claim is necessary.
