Taking care of those in need...? The naïveté of the NYT is touching...

Tax policy should get a relatively low priority in restoring the Gulf Coast, which will be hard for this administration and some of its diehard supporters to accept. [...] Housing vouchers and bolstered unemployment compensation should also come before any discussion of tax breaks.

If lawmakers are worried about paying for those measures, they should simply let President Bush's temporary tax cuts for the rich expire as scheduled.

either naïveté or just plain disingenuousness... there is nothing about the bush administration or its tom delay bought-and-paid-for congressional contingent that's about to bless any move toward backing social programs... even with bush's popularity settling rapidly into the cellar, the president and his ideologically-driven cadre will never back off their agenda to gut any implied social contract...
