Vladimir speaks, but not just to Russia

in addition to deploring the "collapse of the ussr," russian president vladimir putin also said some other very interesting things in his annual state of the nation address...

Vladimir Putin

"[Russia] will decide for itself the pace, terms and conditions of moving towards democracy."

are you listening, condi...?
"Russia is a country that, at the will of its own people, chose democracy for itself."

"Any unlawful methods of struggle ... for ethnic, religious and other interests contradict the principles of democracy."

ukraine and kyrgyzstan...
"Tax authorities have no rights to terrorise business."

yukos notwithstanding...
"The moment we display weakness or spinelessness, our losses will be immeasurably greater."

chechnya...
"We want the development of the economy and the strengthening of the international authority of the states that are our closest neighbours."

"People do not have the right to demand observance of human rights by others if they themselves do not respect and observe human rights."

are you listening george...? donald...? ricardo...?
"We should enable citizens to have access to objective information."

uh-oh, now you're cutting a little too close to home...
